Double Feature with a One-Way Deck by Raphaël Czaja

#2 in Cards hot-list

Note: A one-way deck uses an asymmetrical back design. If one card is secretly flipped 180 degrees, you can easily spot it because the design is reversed.

DEDUCTION

A two-phase experiment in which the performer can apparently identify any card after memorizing a shuffled deck.

Phase #1: The spectator shuffles and cuts the deck, then selects a card and covers it with his hands. The performer runs through the deck, looking at the faces of the cards, apparently memorizing everyone of them. After a moment's thought, he deduces that the missing card is the 4 of Clubs. The spectator checks - it is indeed the 4 of Clubs.

Phase #2: The spectator cuts the deck and deals five cards face down on the table. After roughly estimating how much of the deck has been cut, the performer takes a chance and successfully reveals the colors of two cards, the suits of two others, and the exact identity of the final card (both value and suit).

No force. No duplicate card. No sleight. No gimmick. No memorization of the full deck is required, as this is a staged memory demonstration. Use your favorite one-way deck.

ANYONE BUT FRED

The performer predicts the « name » of a playing card (e.g., « Tony ») which has been randomly generated by two spectators.

Effect: Two spectators are invited to create a random card that will become their lucky card. Each thinks of a different number between 1 and 52. The performer deals through the deck according to their numbers and arrives at two cards. Spectator 1 remembers the value of his card, while Spectator 2 remembers the suit of theirs. The combined value and suit form a playing card known only to the spectators.

The performer now explains that he has assigned a first name to every playing card. He unfolds a sheet of paper displaying 52 cards along with their corresponding names. The spectators locate their card - for example, the 3 of Clubs - and read its name aloud: it is Tony.

The performer then opens a prediction envelope. Inside is a small piece of paper that reads: "Your lucky card is Tony."

Easy to do. No duplicate card. Only one prediction. The prediction is on the table from the start. Use your favorite one-way deck.
