
George Schindler
(Brooklyn, New York: 31st March 1929 - )
Inspired at age 11 seeing magician at school. Learned at age 12 from gift Gilbert magic set. Assisted at Holden’s NY shop 1949-50. Semi-pro debut at age 18 and full-time pro since 1970. Co-founder (with Frank Garcia) and Director of the School for Magicians (in New York City) 1973-78. In 1975 did TV commercial as the "Great Nabisco". Played "Shandu the Magician" in Woody Allen's "Oedipus Wrecks" episode in the film, New York Stories (1989). Teacher of Shelley Carol. 1988 Back Stage's Bistro Award for variety performer (shared with Jeff McBride). AIMC 1989; MIMC 1990. Gold Star 1991. Producer of 6 magic shows. SAM President 1992-93. SAM Hall of Fame 1994. Named Dean of American Magicians by SAM 2005 succeeding Jay Marshall.
Invented Sealed Surprise (1951); Coin in the Ring (1972). Snap Thru Coin in Bottle (1978).
Wrote Beginner's Curriculum (1973), Amedeo's Continental Magic (1974, with Frank Garcia), Magic with Cards (1975, with Frank Garcia), Magic with Everyday Objects (1976), Presto! Magic for Beginners (1977, 192pp), Ventriloquism (1979), and Basic Balloon Sculpture (1983).
