The magician removes a BLUE backed card from his pocket as he talks about coincidence, and how coincidence is decided by two factors: physical proximity and time. He has someone sit on the card. He then removes a RED backed deck from his pocket, and spreads the cards out front and back for the audience to see. Holding the deck in front of his face so that the audience cannot see the faces, he chooses two people that are sitting far apart to select cards. He asks both of them (one at a time - with a time delay between each person) to say 'Stop' as he spreads through the deck. The cards selected are up-jogged and dealt onto a small stand or placed beneath a
coin.
He repeats the same procedure, but with two people sitting close together. (Closer proximity and a small interval between "stops").
Finally, the magician goes to the person holding the blue backed card, spreads through the deck and has that spectator say "Stop". The spot where the spectator said "stop" is marked with a face up card. (Very close proximity, and no delay at all).
The third spectator holds the deck, as the magician returns attention to the cards picked by the first two people.
Turning over the cards selected by the people sitting far apart, the audience sees the cards match on suit.
Low proximity, big delay = a small coincidence. The magician then turns over the cards selected by the two people that were sitting very close together. This time, the two up-jogged cards match not on suit, but rather on value. Higher proximity and smaller delay = a larger coincidence. Finally, as an example of highest proximity and no delay, the magician removes the card from the deck that the third spectator selected, and it matches the suit and value of the blue card the spectator has been sitting on all along.
