Nick Trost's "Eight Card Brainwave" is a classic and killer effect. That effect was the starting point for David when "Theta Waves" was in an embryonic state. What David has done is created an "Eight Card Brainwave" effect that is totally examinable. There is only one odd backed card in the eight-card packet!
The basic effect is simple. A packet of eight arbitrary cards is shown. All eight cards are different on the face. The backs however, are not shown. It is explained to the spectator that there is one card and one card only that's back is different than the others. The spectator decides on one card. That card is held by the spectator, while you show the backs of the unselected cards. Those seven cards have blue backs. The spectator then turns over his selection, and it has a red back! All of the cards can be given away to the spectators.
Here are the features of the effect that a magic dealer would advertise:
- Only eight cards are used: one red backed and seven blue backed
- No gaffs
- No rough/smooth
- No switches of any kind
- Absolutely no sleight of hand
- Can be done with any size cards including jumbo
- Can be done in any performance venue
- Uses your own cards
Aside from the basic effect, David also gives you not one but two presentations both of which are perfect for performing on stage! In fact, they were designed for use on stage. Of course, they can be very easily adapted for close-up performances.
The first is a comedy presentation that uses an old but terrific gag that will cause the audience to groan, and then burst into applause. This presentation uses maximum audience participation, and will bring the house down. The title of this presentation is, "Mine Your Business".
The second presentation is titled, "Alpha Beta Theta", and has been a closer for David's mentalism show. In fact, currently it still is his closer. It has it all. It has four predictions, free decisions made by the spectators; it has comedy, audience participation, and a knock 'em dead ending! This is the Eight Card Brainwave effect on protein shakes, weight lifting, and mega illegal steroids and many other performance enhancing drugs! This is destined to become a permanent staple in your repertoire.
David developed this effect and the two presentations back in 2003, but kept them to himself, and has never discussed them publicly. That is, until now!

Very clever idea!
And the two platform/stage routines included are just...brilliant!
I'm gonna use it for sure in my next platform show...
I'm sure that this clever concept can be expanded..

After reading the preview of this ebook earlier today, I looked up “8 Card Brainwave” as I couldn’t remember the handling! On revising the Nick Trost effect, I spent most of the day trying to work out how David Devlin could give the cards away as souvenirs at the finish! I could not work THAT part out!
Tonight I bought Theta Waves. It was only on buying it that I noticed it came with two presentations.
After reading the introduction, the basic effect and then the method, I stopped reading! I didn’t get to the presentations!
I was too busy getting 7 blue and 1 red card to practise!
This is a very workable routine that WILL be going into my act.
I finally read the presentations David also gives. Both are brilliant entertaining routines.
This is one of those effects that will have you smiling to yourself when you perform it.
