Phone Telepathy: a new approach by Unnamed Magician

"Well it fooled me! I had no idea how you got the information to your assistant. I tried to solve the puzzle, but gave up and read the PDF! I would never have thought of that method!" - Marc Paul

"This is absolutely unbelievable! This is the most out-of-the-box method for this type of trick that I have ever seen!!! I have no idea how the Unnamed Magician managed to think of this method." - Tony Bianco

"If you watch the demo video while keeping all the conditions in mind, you will understand the true impossibility behind this. This looks like real telepathy." - Josh Wilson

"The Unnamed Magician taught me this method a while ago, and it has fooled every single mentalist friend of mine. No one has even gotten close to the method." - Jacob Masotti

I have published a few different phone telepathy effects, such as Over the Phone Telepathy: On Steroids and The Holy Grail of Phone Effects. In this ebook, I will be sharing yet another method of mine. To my knowledge, this exact method has only been previously published once (in a magic magazine over 50 years ago), although I independently came up with it myself some years back. So it is a completely unknown method for the phone telepathy plot, as (to my knowledge) it hasn't been in print anywhere outside of that one source. I also believe that it's one of the most fooling methods for the plot; indeed, I've used it to fool some very knowledgeable magicians and mentalists.

An effect description isn't needed because my friend has recorded a full performance that I've attached below. Before you watch the video though, here are some conditions to keep in mind:

  • Any borrowed deck can be used.
  • The spectator can select any 15 cards from the deck. There are no restrictions of any kind.
  • From those 15 cards, the spectator can select any card as their selection. Again, there is no restriction of any kind.
  • The magician doesn't switch the selected card at any point in time.
  • When the spectator calls the assistant, they do so using their own phone (which the magician never touches at any point in time).
  • The number and name of the assistant are given to the spectator at the beginning of the effect before the selection is made.
  • During the call, the magician sits as silently as a ghost. He doesn't make any verbal sounds and he also doesn't make any non-verbal sounds.
  • The magician isn't using a hidden device to secretly text or call (or thump) the assistant. Additionally, there are no hidden cameras or listening devices in the room, which is to say that the assistant doesn't have eyes or ears in the room. The only point at which the assistant can hear what's happening in the room is when the spectator calls them. In fact, prior to the phone call, the assistant has no idea what the selection is. This is a completely unknown method that (to my knowledge) has only been published once before - so forget about all the methods that you've seen used before in phone telepathy tricks.
  • There are no additional assistants involved (the only assistant is the assistant on the other end of the phone line).
  • The assistant could be located across the world from where the magician and the spectator are located. So this is a long distance telepathy effect.

Note: In the performance, the assistant asked the spectator to repeat the 15 cards. This isn't a part of the trick. Perhaps the assistant did that because they couldn't properly hear the names of all the cards on the first run through. However, in reality, the assistant was supposed to reveal the name of the selected card after the first run through.
