Tricks for Travelling Tricksters

Ken de Courcy
Tricks for Travelling Tricksters by Ken de Courcy

Impromptu tricks for audiences who speak little to no English.

In today's global world it is important to be able to do magic for folks who do not speak your language or who do not understand the cultural nuances and jokes you may have in your primary program. Many of the tricks taught are impromptu. From the introduction by Billy McComb:

I can't think of anyone better qualified to write this than Ken de Courcy. He and Susan take at least a couple of holidays a year to strange exotic countries where the inhabitants speak little or no English. He doesn't, like some magicians, drive his wife potty by...

Remote Close Up 2

Renzo Grosso
Remote Close Up 2 by Renzo Grosso... you will find:

REMOTE SUGGESTIONS: Do you know "The trick that fooled Einstein"? "A splendid game with coins", to be attributed to Luca Pacioli (1445-1517); according to a recent legend - it was performed by the mentalist Al Koran (1914-1972) in front of Einstein who was struck by it (cit. The magic of numbers). It is an impromptu effect, close up, with coins; I wanted to create an effect to propose to my friends on the phone. The challenge was to invent a forcing, to be performed on the phone and disguising it logically within the description: in the end, I did it: "Remote Suggestions"...

Bro. John Hamman Reimagined

Paul A. Lelekis
Bro. John Hamman Reimagined by Paul A. Lelekis

This e-book is a fun-filled, hilarious 12-15 minute routine, that one can perform with a borrowed deck.

This routine is composed of four monster routines, spliced together into a very funny event, that crescendos into Mr. Hamman's most prized effect, "The Signed Card". But this version has been brought into the 21st century. Now, when someone hands you a deck of cards and says "Do a trick!" you will now be equipped with a 4-part routine that fully engages your spectators and will crescendo into a truly mind-blowing finale - and it's impromptu.

1) The spectator first picks out any four...

Three Rapid Spellers

Ian Baxter
Three Rapid Spellers by Ian Baxter

To all magicians, amateur and professional - here is a loaded question:

Have you ever been bored silly watching a magician perform a spelling trick?

This is contentious and very obviously axiomatic. Quoting from the Preface of his new manuscript, Australian card man Ian Baxter comments: "Unfortunately, spelling effects in card magic hold the onerous title of being the most laborious, boring presentations imaginable."

This is the point at issue - boredom setting in, thanks to the tedium of endless counting and spelling, usually propped up with trivial patter. Such effects are simply...

The 7th Card Mystery by Biagio Fasano

An impromptu and self-working Card Magic trick, always ready to perform with any deck.

This is an incredible impromptu and automatic card magic effect, which uses seven cards, taken at random from the deck. A spectator chooses only one of these and, by mentally answering questions posed by the magician, will shuffle the deck according to his own thoughts and will. The illusionist will then announce that, one by one, all the cards that end up at the top of the pack, returned to him by the spectator, will be eliminated at the end of each series of further shuffles that he will personally...

Reviewed by David Kay

This is an amazing, almost self working card trick. There is minimal setup, but enough that you couldn't do this impromptu, however the resulting effect is worth it. The dirty work, which is next to nothing if you have any experience with cards, is done at the very beginning, and allows you to focus your attention on giving a good performance. It is a magician fooler too, as I couldnt see anyone reverse engineering...

I am very fond of his Lateral Time as I love any effect that allows you to predict a time... practically impromptu. Stunts with Stage Money by Jack Lamonte

From the introduction:

Every magician will have many ideas for the use of Imitation Notes with his Magic ... Notably the ever popular apparent destruction of a borrowed bank note. Such an effect is a traditional one in Magic ... only a magician is crazy or skillful enough in the eyes of the audience to burn or tear a treasury note ... it is direct in appeal and one which always registers with an audience. It is the magic ... or miracle in the eyes of some ... which they expect from a Magician. It is up to the magician to make the most of his effects and the use of Imitation Notes in Treasury...

The Aura Effect

Devin Knight
The Aura Effect by Devin Knight

The Aura Effect revives several ancient ideas from the turn of the century and brings them into the modern day. These are ideas you will use. You can create the illusion that the spectators feel your aura.

Magnetic Fingertips: This has been a staple in Devin Knight's career; it was also a favorite of the late Al Mann. The performer holds his fingers in front of a spectator's palm and the subject definitely feels an icy chill radiate from the performer's fingers. The performer claims this sensation is his aura. Two methods are explained. One method is completely impromptu and can be done on...

Coins Thru Table by Paul A. Lelekis

First of all let me explain that this Coins Thru Table routine can also be used as a Coins Across routine, which is a routine I've been using for about 28 years while table-hopping.

This routine is unlike any other routine you've seen. 5 coins are used (one contrasting coin) and all are regular coins. No shells, no hidden props, no gaffed coins are used. Carry these 5 coins in your pocket and you will be ready to perform an impromptu miracle that will really "shake up" your spectators. And it's simple to do. In addition, there are NO weird sleights or 'knuckle-busters' used in this routine....
