Souvenirs d'Italie by Davide Rubat Remond

With Souvenirs d'Italie I have wanted to remember and celebrate the old, beloved tourist postcards that were the backdrop to everyone's holidays, those who lived them and those who received them indirectly, almost as an achievement for a promise kept.

Souvenir d'Italie is an effect that makes it possible to make an impossible prediction: one Italian city out of the eight depicted on the postcard is chosen, or even only thought of, by a spectator, who holds them in a bunch in his hands.

The spectator will have to distribute them face down on the table, covered by their respective place cards, completely hidden from view. After this operation, no one, not even the spectator, will be able to know the position occupied by the city he has chosen. The performer, after having his back turned the whole time, will be able to identify the spectator's favorite city, and after having eliminated, one by one, all the seven cities not involved, canceling their positions by turning over their placeholders, only one will remain. The only city chosen by the spectator.

And that's not all! If you turn over the last placeholder, the one referring to the chosen city, a big X will appear on its back. The only placeholder marked with an X is the one underneath which the spectator will place the postcard chosen from the eight in the packet.

The absolutely incredible thing is that the eight placeholders, which will serve as a cover for the cards, will be placed on the table before the spectator makes his or her choice.

The e-book contains all the templates to be printed and possibly laminated (strongly recommended), the branded (two versions) and unbranded place cards, the eight postcards and a list to be used as a reminder for the spectator or to indicate to others present the choice without having to say it.

I received this first beautiful review:

"Souvenir d'Italie is an effect with amazing results. Davide has managed to combine a number of familiar methods and put them through his very personal blender to create a routine that leaves nothing to chance, especially when it comes to impressing the audience. Special kudos to the finished work, which provides everything, but everything you need to present a number that will be talked about for a long time. Absolutely recommended." - Mazz Mariano

Unfortunately, I am very disappointed with this effect.

While it is based on an interesting mathematical principle, the attempt to turn it into a magic trick is in my opinion terrible, and nothing that could be used in any kind of real environment. It is far too procedural to be entertaining, and in my opinion, would never produce anything like the audience reaction that the advert suggests.

More than that, without giving away the method, the combination of the names on the postcards, the way the postcards are arranged beforehand, the nature of the instructions, and the precise and exact manner in which they are delivered would make any audience scream "mathematical principle in play here".

If that weren't enough, the instructions are so exact and have to be followed while your back is turned, which means that the spectator could very easily make a mistake. Since you would have no way of knowing they'd got something wrong, there would be no way for you to recover and your big reveal would be totally wrong.

I therefore recommend against getting this effect.

I do however strongly recommend continuing to use this site, as I wrote a more detailed version (including my observations on the method) of this review to Chris Wasshuber after I bought the effect, and as part of his reply he said "I would also like to ask you to share your opinion in a review of the product. This would help others better understand if this is the right product for them or not. Also star-rating your purchases would be a great way to help weed out the good from the bad." This would suggest that Chris is a trustworthy seller who is concerned to make sure that his customers buy things that are right for them, rather than just wanting to sell things to us, and that's a rare thing in this internet world!
