Bridge

Bridge was introduced in the late 19th century and is a derivative of Whist which appeared in England in the 16th century. Today's popular version "Contract Bridge" was perfected by Harold S. Vanderbilt, American multi-millionaire and three-time America's Cup winner, in 1925. It incorporated many of the most popular principles and also produced a scoring table.
The game of bridge is as rich in strategies and tactics as chess, but it is a much more social game where four players play in teams of two against each other. There is also a larger surprise component since you do not see the cards your opponents hold whereas in chess you clearly see your opponents position and you can study it in detail.

Edwin (Eddie) Kantar

The Forcing Pass by Edwin (Eddie) KantarThis book is the outgrowth of a series of articles on the "forcing pass" which Eddie wrote for the American Contract Bridge League Bulletin, appearing from June 1982 through June 1983. He completely reworked and revised it in 2006.

While these articles were appearing, Eddie took special note of hands on this subject. As he was dealing with uncharted territory, it is not too unusual that he has altered many of his original opinions. Eddie is now satisfied that a partnership utilizing the methods advocated in this work will have a decided advantage over a partnership which has no understandings....

Judson J. Cameron

Cheating at Bridge by Judson J. CameronMany books on Bridge have been written but very little on advantage play at Bridge. This is quite curious a fact because for other popular card games, such as Poker, this is not the case. Many books have been written on cheating at Poker. It should be obvious if cheating happens at Poker it will also happen at Bridge or any other game for money or honor.

The best protection is knowledge. And this ebook although written originally in 1933 will give you all the knowledge you need to detect and thus protect yourself from being taken advantage of.

Edwin (Eddie) Kantar

Defensive Tips by Edwin (Eddie) KantarThis is a completely revised edition of Kantar's 1994 bestseller. The best defensive tips you will ever find are in this ebook.
  • Don't compound a crime. If you, or more likely your partner, have made an error, do not lose your cool. Many contracts can still be beaten after one defensive error, seldom after TWO.
  • The speed of the play may be a clue to declarer's problem. When playing a 4-3 trump fit, play usually slows to a crawl.
  • Do not take your eye off the ball by focusing all of the attention on one suit to the exclusion of the entire hand.
  • When declarer leads a side suit from dummmy...

Terry Quinn

The Great Bridge Conspiracy by Terry QuinnThe Great Bridge Conspiracy ebook chronicles the espionage and card playing exploits of Captain Diggery Piper -- a flamboyant expert first created by Terry Quinn for a serial in Games Magazine. Just as Carroll's Through the Looking Glass and Nabokov's The Defense are structured in accordance with the rules and logic of chess, so Quinn has patterned the action of this swift-paced, suspenseful tale on the psychological intricacies of bridge, craftily building a house of cards that tumbles into a surprise ending.

Donald Parson

Fall of the Cards by Donald Parson
"The hands are 'provocative' in the sense that they will, or at least ought to, provoke the reader to use his or her brains." - Bridge Plus
Problems of the type for which the author is infamous are limited in number, for they demand a combination of qualities not often found together. They should be problems rather than puzzles, instructive rather than baffling, presenting situations that arise in everyday play. They should be short and snappy, and answerable by a concise statement, preferably early in the game; for if delayed too long, variations in defense may lead to complications that...

Chris Hasney

Simplicity Bridge by Chris HasneyFrom the introduction:

Charles Goren was right. As early as the mid-1950s he was urging bridge players to avoid getting caught up in all the trendy new bidding systems with their myriad confounding conventions. Eventually, even the great Goren was dragged screaming and kicking into the new age of scientific bidding, allowing that things like the Blackwood ace-asking convention and the artificial 2C Stayman bid to check for a 4-4 major suit fit after a 1NT opening bid could be useful at times. But in fighting against complications to our great game of contract bridge, Charles Goren was...

Chris Hasney & Jerry Pottier

The Basic American Bidding System by Chris Hasney & Jerry PottierThe American Bridge Series is designed as a sequential set of bidding courses, suitable for self-study or classroom-style study under the guidance of a professional bridge teacher. Volumes I through III include declarer play and defense skills as they relate to the bidding skills taught in each text. Volume IV is reserved for true experts; thus, declarer play and defense lessons would be an insult and are not included. The entire series takes about five years of study and practice to complete.

Volume I, The Basic American Bidding System, was written for beginners and for social players who...

Chris Hasney & Jerry Pottier

The Intermediate American Bidding System by Chris Hasney & Jerry PottierVolume II, The Intermediate American Bidding System, makes the transition to modern methods including weak two openings. It teaches all of the pieces of "Standard" American in a way that integrates all of the varied forms of same. Don't be thrown by the term "intermediate." Many duplicate players think that they have reached that level when they can no longer play in novice games. Not so. "Intermediate," as defined by the authors, can vary from folks with zero ACBL masterpoints to 2500 masterpoints. It's not the points that count, it's the skill level.

Chris Hasney & Jerry Pottier

The Advanced American Bidding System by Chris Hasney & Jerry PottierVolume III, The Advanced American Bidding System presumes a complete understanding and skill with all of the material in Volume II. However, some of the Volume II material is repeated for intended redundancy, since the authors suspect that many folks who shouldn't be attempting to study Volume III will do so anyway. After all, "I'm a Life Master, I must be Advanced." The authors suggest that anyone not comfortable playing in Flight A at an ACBL regional or national tournament, or the World Bridge Federation (WBF) or other governing body equivalent thereof avoid purchase and study of Volume III until they have...

The Expert American Bidding System by Chris Hasney & Jerry PottierExpert American, Volume IV in The American Bridge Series, culminates the work begun in 1998 by bridge student Chris Hasney and expert player and system design theorist Dr. Gerald Pottier (Jerry). Volumes I and II, Basic and Intermediate American, covered the card game contract bridge from novice to duplicate tournament Flight C and B levels using Standard American bidding methods. Volume III, Advanced American, married those methods with others modified from other systems or newly designed by Dr. Pottier. It has been played successfully in tournaments in Flight A at the regional and national level. This work completes the task begun...

College Bridge Series Second Semester by Chris Hasney2nd semester contains only 11 prepared lessons, several of which can be assigned as homework reading. This allows instructors time to complete any unfinished work from 1st semester and still have extra time for integrating new members into the club, final prep for online College Bowl competition, etc. It should be noted that the rules for the competition have changed. You now have two chances (one each semester) to qualify, but they occur much earlier in the calendar year in fall and winter. Adapt and overcome.
