Why do ACAAN with one deck when you can up the apparent impossibility with two decks? That's the beauty of Arbitrium.

Imagine removing a prediction card and placing it in your pocket. You then bring out two decks, one with numbered cards and one standard deck. The spectator makes an actual free choice from each deck, selecting one number and one playing card. Wrong Turn is a fun and baffling approach to ACAAN that adds a kicker ending your spectators will never see coming. While most effects in this plot are telegraphed, this surprising twist strengthens the climax of the effect, further engaging your audience, while delivering even greater impact.

A deck of cards is displayed as the performer mentions he made a prediction in the deck. The spectator cuts to a card, remembers it, then returns it anywhere in the deck. The participant then thoroughly shuffles the cards so their selection is genuinely lost in the deck. Any number from 1 to 52 is...

The spectator finds their card in an incredible way, with a stunning kicker revelation.

The jokers are given to a spectator to hold, then a card is selected. The chosen card is shuffled and lost in the deck. The cards are spread face down and the spectator freely inserts the jokers face up around any single card, isolating it from the rest. This mystery card is now turned over to reveal that, incredibly, it is their selected card. The effect could end right here, but in an unexpected finale, the jokers are turned over to reveal a jaw-dropping prediction.

Four cards are shown. They are the Four Aces. The cards are given a "twist" and when the cards are again counted it is seen that one of the aces has turned face down. This is repeated three more times, each time an ace has turned face down until all four aces are face down. The magician offers to explain how the trick was accomplished. The performer shows three cards: two jokers, and the queen of hearts. The queen of hearts is the money card. All the spectators have to do is follow the queen. No matter how hard they try, it just isn't possible. The queen is anywhere but where they think she is. Finally, in an effort to make it easier to follow, one of the jokers is set aside. The queen is mixed with the one remaining joker. Instantly, the queen has vanished leaving only two jokers in your hands. The "joker" that was set aside, and has been in full view the entire time is turned over and is found to be the missing queen. The...

In effect, a card is selected and signed. The card is then cleanly torn into four separate pieces. The pieces are then placed between the fingers ala The Multiplying Billiard Balls, and the hands are otherwise empty (they really are!). The pieces are then gathered up one at a time. Each side of each piece is clearly shown. The bundled pieces then instantly pop open in a "flash". The card is fully restored and given to the spectator to keep as a souvenir.

This is a fun routine in which two cards are selected from two different colored packets. The selected cards trade packets 3 times, each time seemingly more impossible than the last. The methods are intriguing because the "move" comes after the effect. At first glance, this routine will appear complicated and convoluted. However, after working through the routine, and getting comfortable and familiar with it, you will see that it is rather simple.

This is the first in a new series of videos by David Devlin. In this video, David teaches three of his best effects. These effects are not difficult to perform, but each one is a very hard-hitting effect. Here are the effects:

Boomerang: This will knock them on their butts. A deck with a blue back (which has been in use) has from it a card selected and signed. Two jokers with red backs are introduced and shown freely. The selected card is pushed into the center of the deck by the spectator. Without coming near the deck, the signed selection materializes between the jokers! Once again, the...

Effect: The performer displays a 12-month wall calendar. Each of the 366 days (Leap Year has been accounted for) has a single playing card assigned to it. No two days in each month has the same card assigned to it. So, for example, a month with 31 days in it contains 31 different cards. It is also pointed out that no one card appears more than once on any particular date. So the card that is assigned to the 15th of January is not found on the 15th of any other month.

A spectator is asked to call out any date that comes to mind. Suppose the date in June 5th. Now, another spectator is asked...

This came about thanks to Larry Jennings' classic effect, "The Visitor". David has always loved that effect. It is impromptu, there is no setup, a borrowed deck can be used, and the effect is stunning. One day, David was playing with the routine, and began to think along the lines of, "Wouldn't it be cool if the selected card could be seen the entire time? What if the spectator could see their card sitting between the two face down cards right up until the very moment that it vanishes?" The answers, of course, are yes! Of course it would be cool. And with The Visitation these things are possible!

A blue backed deck is shown. A card is removed, and placed aside. The deck is spread face down. It is seen that all of the cards have blue backs, except for one card which has a red back. Two cards are now very randomly chosen, and their values are added together. Let's assume that the total is "13" (the actual total is up to you!). The deck is turned face up (in every instance) and the cards are dealt one at a time until the 13th (or whatever value was chosen) card is dealt. Let's say that the 13th card is the Queen of Clubs. The deck is now spread face down. Each and every card has a blue...

Two spectators are invited on stage. Spectator A gives the deck a shuffle, and then deals exactly twenty cards into the magician's hand. The performer shuffles the twenty cards, and then gives some of the cards to Spectator A and the rest to Spectator B, who proceed to shuffle them further. Both packets of cards are then handed back to the performer who shuffles the twenty cards together.

The performer now explains that this is going to be a demonstration in 'Psychic Telekinetic Teleportation'. The performer has spectator A hold out his hand into which exactly ten cards are dealt. Spectator...

This is one of David's favorite effects. Not only does it fry laymen, but it also fools magicians as well. It can be performed at any point during your act. It does not have to be an opener or a closer, but it could be used as either. It is a very powerful effect because it seems very hands-off and is extremely visual. It is also easy to do!

Effect: Two red backed jokers are freely shown, and are set aside. A spectator selects a card from a blue backed deck, and signs it (the selection must be signed, or the effect is greatly diminished). In this example let's say that the card is the three...

This is a card act rather than a single trick. It is a full-deck effect, tells a story, has audience participation as spectators become the characters, is full of magic, and has an ending that no one will see coming that will fry the audience. It is called, The Tournament, and it will convince your audiences that you are the greatest card cheat of all-time. There is no false dealing, which means that the dealing portions of this routine are all self-working. The finale of the act is a mind-blower and brings everything to a logical conclusion.

Effect: A collection of coins of different denominations is displayed on the table. The right hand is kept well away from the coins, which are then gathered up one at a time by the left hand. The left and right hands are closed into fists. A magical gesture is made, and all of the coins vanish from the left hand and appear in the right hand…but wait…one of the coins failed to go across. The coin is picked up with the left hand, the hands are closed into fists, a magical gesture is made, and the final coin travels from the left hand to the right hand.

The DeLorian gimmick allows you to apparently remove a folded card from under the cellophane of the card case in a natural and completely deceptive way....

Being a huge fan of the classic 'rising card' effect, Dave asked himself the following question: "Is it possible to cause a freely selected and signed card to rise from the centre of a regular deck of cards that is locked inside the card case?"

The answer is YES! The answer is AIR!

Any card is freely selected from the deck. The card is signed before being lost back into the pack. The pack is placed into the box and you focus your attention on the top of the cased deck. Slowly and eerily, a card is seen to rise from the center for well over half its length. That card is the signed card....

A blue backed deck is removed from its case. The deck is spread and your spectators are asked to call out the names of some cards that they see. You then take the named cards and, one by one, begin to magically change their back colour from blue to red. Offering a better look at the technique you announce that you will change the back of another card...

...IN SLOW MOTION!

With a gentle wave of your hand, the card begins to visibly change. The card actually appears to change as you move your hand back and forth over it! You pause halfway - the card under your hand is half blue and half...

The Torn and Restored card that breaks the mould. Dave has kept it a secret for more than eight years.

Effect: Fold a selected and signed card into quarters and then fairly rip it up. Now, slowly and visually you start to fuse the pieces back together again. And when we say 'fuse' we mean that the pieces really fuse together before your eyes. The entire card is eventually restored and everything can be examined.

'Card to Box' meets 'Deck to Pocket' in this insanely visual transpostion.

The Effect: You remove the deck from its case and have a spectator freely choose any card - no force - and sign it across the face. You then place the card case into your pocket before losing the signed card back into the centre of the deck. With a snap of your fingers you claim that you have made the card jump to your pocket and appear inside the card case. Your audience doesn't believe you. But, with a totally empty hand you reach into your pocket and produce...the entire deck. The spectator turns his attention back...

SELF WORKING - SELF CONTAINED - INSTANT RESET - WORKS EVERY TIME

(This is Dave's treatment of Cameron Francis' effect 18: A Powerhouse Prediction Effect.)

EFFECT: You display a deck of cards and begin by telling your spectator two pieces of information:

1. One of the cards in the deck has had its back altered.
2. The deck is in a completely random order but for three cards which you have specifically positioned for the experiment.

Impossibly produce a card the spectator is thinking of from a cased deck, bound with a rubber band!

Your spectator shuffles the deck and hands it back to you. You make no moves. They think of a card from inside the deck. You make no moves. They are then immediately handed the deck to shuffle again. You make no moves. The deck is fairly cased and then bound with a rubber band. Within THREE SECONDS you produce one card from inside the deck yet the deck itself is still cased and bound. The spectator removes the band. The spectator removes the deck and is asked to locate the card they were thinking...
