Edwin Hooper
(Bideford, Devon, England: 5th August 1925 - 17th July 1992)
Learned at age 10 from book. Debut at age 14. In WW II in Army doing troop shows. Summers worked Punch & Judy at Wollacombe beach. Aka "Edwin the Magician" since 1947, specializing in kid-shows. Full-time pro since 1951. In 1954 with his savings and a ₤200 loan he moved back to his home town of Bideford and founded the Supreme Magic Company, which grew to become one of the world's 3 largest magic manufacturer-dealerships. 1977 Louis Bertol Trophy. President, British Ring, 1977-78. AFAP Bronze Medal 1983. 1992 AMA Lifetime Achievement Award. Due to ill health sold Supreme in 1987, remaining as Honorary President. Reentered business in 1989 as Edwin's Magic Arts.
Married to magicienne Ray Silver 1957-72. Their son, Michael Hooper, was with Supreme for a while, but since dropped out of magic.
Inventor-improver of over 1,300 marketed effects, including 13 Little Pigs, Surprise Box, and Hen Bag. Wrote Edwin's Magic (2 vols, 1989, 286+310pp), A Host of Surprises (1990, 313pp), and Edwin's Magic Finale (1991, 320pp). Articles in Magigram, Pentagram, Linking Ring, MUM, Magic Manuscript, Magic Circular, Genii, Wizard, Budget, etc. Video (1990).
