Al Smith was born what seems like a very long time ago; in Maltby in the West Riding Of Yorkshire, England. He's made a nuisance of himself as a performer, writer, lecturer and general layabout. He loves all magic, but has a particular preference for cards, calling himself a Card Specialist. The thinking, such as it is, behind this is that being a Specialist suggests some degree of expertise. Whereas anybody and everybody can specialise without being any good.

He has written several books, of which only the best-selling Around The Square is not card related. He's a very modest fellow, too.

Oh No Not Another Card Book is probably a more apt title for a card book. In fact for any card book published since the printing press was first unleashed. On the other hand, what's wrong with another card book? That's a rhetorical question, since the obvious answer is nothing. Card fans can't get enough of their favourite fix and anything that only marginally irritates those non-persons who pretend they aren't fond of cards has got to be good news.

This collection is partly that; a revisit to some previously published oddments and a few new(?) assaults on familiar card-friendly themes. ...

An intriguing selection of card effects, A Spell Of Cards is not wholly concerned with spelling tricks. There are more than several offering a sideways glance at the concept. They take the spelling genre a little bit off the usual well-beaten track.

Among the non-spellers, there are a few move-related fragments. Nothing to run and hide from, though faro shuffles and bottom deals get a look in along the way; as well as established favourites like the Braue Addition, Double Undercut and the odd false shuffle.
