Manipulation & XCM

The manipulation of playing cards is a classic stage magic act where the magician plugs cards and entire fans out of thin air and vanishes them the next moment.

In recent years the manipulation of cards has been taken to a completely new level with stunts that look utterly impossible. Usually this new modern outgrowth is called eXtreme Card Manipulation (XCM). It is an extreme form of card flourishes. It is actually contact juggling with cards.

This ebook is a complete course in the art of manipulating playing cards, from back palms, to catching cards, card fans, flourishes, gimmicks and holders, and how to put it all together into a routine.

Paul Fleming wrote:

This recent work on card manipulation is divided into four sections which deal with (1) the back-palming of cards, (2) card fans, (3) card flourishes, and (4) suggestions for routines. Since we have no special knowledge of card fanning or card flourishes - and, because they lack...

Maciej Dziegielewski
Ekaf by Maciej Dziegielewski
"I'm not a big fan of twirls flourishes but the way Maciej does them it is really beautiful!" - Dominik Mastrianni

"Very nice combination of classic and original sleights. Nicely flowing flourish overall." - Alexander Melnik (Decemberboys)

"cool stuff dude :)" - Sebastian Skowron

"I like the card transpo-thing. :)" - Jonas Haglund

Ekaf is 'fake' reversed. The reason for this title is that these card flourishes and manipulations look stunning and difficult, but are for the most part relatively easy to do. It is therefore the ideal entry routine for somebody to get into flourishes,...

Tommy Wonder
The Shrinking Fan of Cards by Tommy Wonder

This is the classic 'Diminishing Cards' effect, but completely revamped Tommy Wonder style. The gimmick is ingenious and allows for an extremely visual effect. The cards are held in a nice fan and are gradually getting smaller in full view. There is no squeezing and exchanging of cards. The fan simply shrinks in size including the card faces and indexes. The clever gimmick does it all. Video explains how to gimmick is constructed and it is used.

Tommy Wonder
Cards to Card Case by Tommy Wonder

This is a beautifully motivated opening effect for a card manipulation act. A deck of cards is introduced. The cards are taken out of the case. The cards and the case magically switch places several times. Besides the clever gimmick it is really a lesson in how to motivate the various effects in the performance. Wonder demonstrates how this effect of a deck of cards switching place with its case can be turned into a wonderfully motivated episode rather than an unmotivated series of effects. Wonder finds a good reason for every sequence that turns a simple trick into a story and thus beautiful...

Ricky Kinosa
The Circle Fan by Ricky Kinosa

Most every card man can do a pressure fan and many can do one-handed fans but can you do a circular fan, one that goes around 360 degrees and closes on itself? There are a few methods in circulation. Ricky explains the one developed by Toyozane Sanada. Sanada is a very creative Japanese magician who invented among other things the Sanada gimmick which is very effective for sponge ball work. However, there is no good explanation of how to do the Sanada fan in print. You can find it demonstrated on a number of videos but there is no good explanation that teaches the technique at least not in English. ...
