A large coin is made to spin on its edge around the inside rim of a metal basin.

This effect was popular over a hundred years ago with all types of performers both for parties and at outdoor venues. The high keening sound made by the coin attracts a large crowd of onlookers who become fixated by the combination of sight and sound.

Scotland's top sleight-of-hand artist gives up one of his pet routines. It looks like real magic. A copper coin changes to a silver coin and back several times.

Surprisingly there are no really difficult moves. You will need a copper and a silver coin, but the spectators only see one at any given moment. And Paul's clever handling eliminates the thought in the spectators mind that there could be two coins.

#3 in the "Sit-Down Coin Magic" Series, this double coin box routine is an absolute stunner!

Two small brass boxes with lids are shown empty. The lids are replaced. After a magic gesture, one of the boxes has 4 silver coins in it! These are dumped into a spectator's hand (they can be examined) and then replaced in the box. The lids are placed on both boxes. Suddenly, the box with the coins is empty, and the other box now holds the coins! Just as suddenly, the coins jump back to the first box!

Next, the 4 silver coins instantly and miraculously change to 4 copper coins! These copper coins...

This is a quintessential Slydini routine, a tour-de-force of misdirection combined with lapping, secret takes, and drops. A single coin miraculously vanishes and reappears several times. It almost seems to be melting away between the fingers of the performer.

The idea for this routine came after I read Derek Dingle's Silver Quick routine in Apocalypse (Sept. 1978) which was a sort of coins across into a spectator's hand. I played around with the Dingle routine for a while but I felt I would not be able to use it commercially, although I liked the idea of something happening with the coins in a spectator's hands. After much experimentation and change, Slo-Mo was put together and is the routine I have been using with lay people ever since. I hope you like it.

If you enjoy simple to do magic that never requires a re-set and which you can do anytime, anywhere, you will love this two-stage routine using a 10p and a £2 coin. (Any two coins of different sizes can be used for this effect.)

#2 in the Sit-Down Coin Magic series, this is one of Scott's most acclaimed coin routines. You introduce a saltshaker filled with "coin concentrate" (silver glitter). You sprinkle a little of the dust onto your obviously empty hand, squeeze, and a half dollar appears in your hand! You decide to demonstrate the special properties of this coin, making it vanish, reappear, penetrate the table, turn into a foreign copper coin and back to a half dollar! A collection of 25 coin effects.

Coin effects have always been my niche in the world of magic. Since I was a boy, watching a coin vanish or appear has fascinated me. The effects use:

• Invisiblair: A holdout (a gambling device that has been used for nearly 100 years) that I have modified specifically for coins.
• Folding Half: A gimmicked coin that can be produced under the most improbable of circumstances.
• Double Stick Tape: Providing an inexpensive means to vanish a coin from either hand impromptu and without a trace.

Two coins are shown and can be examined if required. They can also be borrowed if preferred. One of them has a sticker bearing a spectator's initials placed on it. A handkerchief is placed over the signed coin and the plain one is positioned on top of the cloth which is folded back across it. A wave of a magic marker pen across the handkerchief, and immediately the cloth is unfolded to reveal that the signed coin is now resting on top of the handkerchief, and on the table below the cloth is the unsigned one.

Simple to do, this requires one common coin gimmick.

Borrow a coin. Get it signed and bend it in your hand. It is a clear and strong effect. Titanas explains two different variations which can be performed standing.

The video is shot for my taste from a bit too far, particularly in the demonstration part the coin is hard to see. However, the explanation is clear and should not cause any difficulties for you to learn this wonderful effect.

A visual penetration of coin through can.

The performer finishes his / her can of drink and shakes every last drop out. A coin is then shown and placed in the palm of the other hand. The base of the can is impacted on the coin several times and then penetrates the base of the can. The spectators can hear the coin pass through the metal. The coin is inside the can and the spectator can take the coin out and keep both items if they wish.

This is a great little idea combining a common gimmick with a clever move to accomplish a coin penetrating a can - a visual and audible effect.

Physically impossible! Show a sealed tic tac box, show a ten pence coin, then spit blow the ten pence into the sealed tic tac box and hand it out to the spectator.

Offering to demonstrate a secret exercise that master pickpockets use to sharpen their skills, a small coin purse, a half dollar and a metal washer are given out for examination. The magician explains that the idea is to place the half dollar in the purse, which he does, and cause it to change places with the washer. The first time he merely rubs the washer along the bottom edge of the purse, yet when he brings his hand away it’s seen he’s holding the half dollar. The washer is dumped from the purse.

The Linking Rings effect is a classic of magic and for good reason: a direct and simple method coupled with the visual aspect of the props have made this a strong hold in most magicians' working arsenals.

So what is wrong with the original that a new one needs to be brought forth? Well, here are a few small points to take into consideration:
