A spectator freely selects a card and returns it to the middle of the deck. The cards are split into two packets and interlaced face-up into face-down. In an instant, every card turns face-up except the selection - still face-down. And it's not over. Why can the magician locate the selection so cleanly? Because it's the only card in the deck that's different from all the others.
Bottom Fan Control: This routine also teaches my bottom control: the spectator's card is openly placed into the middle of the deck, the magician squares the pack, and the selection is controlled straight to the bottom.

Performance transcript:
- First, give the deck a shuffle.
- Then I'll deal the cards one by one.
- You can call stop anytime you like.
- Okay.
- Let's say you stop on this card.
- These are the cards you didn't stop on.
- You could've stopped on any card.
- Every card is different.
- But you finally stopped on this one.
- Remember it.
- The 5 of Hearts.
- Now we'll lose the freely chosen 5 of Hearts into the deck.
- Bury it somewhere inside.
- You can see every card is different.
- Then I'll run cards off the top.
- Have you call stop anywhere again.
- Suppose you stop right here.
- Turn that stopping point face down.
- These remain face-up.
- I'm going to interlace the face-up and face-down packets.
- Shuffle them together.
- You can clearly see the cards are mixed face-up and face-down.
- A genuinely mixed condition.
- Right?
- Now all I need is one second.
- A snap of the fingers.
- When I spread the cards again—you'll see every card instantly straighten to the same orientation.
- Except for one single face-down card.
- And that turns out to be the originally selected 5 of Hearts.

- You might wonder—how did I find the 5 of Hearts?
- The reason is simple.
- The 5 of Hearts is marked.
- I'm not sure you can see it.
- There's a mark on it.
- You might not notice it.
- It's hard to see without comparison.
- But if you compare it with other cards—
- The marking becomes very obvious.
