Sun Tzu: The Principles of War

Barton Whaley
Sun Tzu: The Principles of War by Barton Whaley... as meaning merely that those who know this principle will win. This ignores the possibility that the opponent might also know at least something of this as well as Sun Tzu's Indirect/Direct Principle. From that wider perspective victory will go to the first to master these two principles, the one who keeps one step ahead in mastery. This is, in part, why Bart Whaley has presented this 38th translation.

Sun Tzu's principles of war transcend both time and cultures. There are two timeless factors – its level of analysis and its psychological focus.

First, and most obvious, is Sun...

John Payne Collier

John Payne Collier(11th January 1789 – 17th September 1883)

John Payne Collier was an English writer and Shakespearean critic. He was also a forger who would pass off his own annotations and amendments as old ones. Scholars today still debate if Collier was rotten to the bone and everything he produced was a forgery or if this was to a large degree a conspiracy of dilettant upper-class folks against a hard-working enthusiast from the lower class. The truth often lies somewhere in the middle. While some of the annotations have been shown by scientific methods as forgeries, Collier also did a lot of valuable work in his compilations and republications of rare volumes.

Gozinta Boxes Revisited

Gozinta Boxes Revisited by Lubor Fiedler & Chris Wasshuber

Lubor Fiedler's Gozinta Boxes is my all time favorite illusion. It has been so ever since I first saw it performed decades ago. I love the simplicity, clarity, and impossibility of the effect. Two boxes. One clearly larger than the other, because one fits into the other. But wait - now the larger one is smaller and the smaller one is larger. Every child can understand the impossibility of this. It transcends any language or cultural barrier. Since no explanation is necessary the magic first happens on a very deep visceral level. But then when the mind kicks in and tries to find an explanation...

The removal of a solid ring from the center of a piece of string in a most deceptive manner. Simple to execute, a quick presentation, and can be done surrounded.

There has been much controversy over the creation of this brilliant effect. Harvey Rosenthal, Ray Grismer, among others, claimed to be the inventor. Whoever it was, it stands as a modern-day classic. Brick Tilley teaches the version he has been doing for decades.
