When Lewis Ganson asked Dai Vernon what he considered to be the best card effect, he replied that in his opinion "Matching The Cards" would be difficult to beat, particularly when performed for lay audiences. His opinion is shared by many of the world's leading card experts, who have often featured one version or another in their acts.

The granddaddy of this effect can be found in Magician's Tricks by Hatton and Plate. The effect of Vernon's version is as follows:

A card is selected by a spectator and placed face down on the table without the face being shown, then the performer endeavors to cut to the three other...

Al Koran convinced Rovi that it was the easy-to-follow plot with a strong magical impact for which there appeared to be no explanation, that had the greatest impression on audiences. Rovi has followed that dictum with great success, devising routines of his own, all of which are styled to entertain. Those readers who expect to have to learn difficult sleights or memorize long sequences of moves, can breathe a sigh of relief. Rovi's magic is not like that, it is based on simplicity and subtlety.

This is the first part of Vernon's famous Inner Secrets of Card Magic series. It includes notable work on color changes. In "Dai Vernon's Colour Changing Pack" Vernon provides the proper motivation for the use of the Hindu Shuffle: showing the back color of the deck. This was the publication that taught me the Three Card Monte many years ago. It has all you ever need on this wonderful performance piece - and then some.

Erdnase writes in Expert at the Card Table:

"There is not a single card feat in the whole calendar that will give as good returns for the amount of practice required, or that will mystify as greatly, or cause as much amusement, or bear as much repetition as this little game!

In 1911, Okito was in partnership with Joe Klein in a magic shop on Broadway, New York. Joe suffered from indigestion and kept his boxes of pills in a drawer in the shop. Okito often handled the pill boxes and noticed that the lid would fit on both bottom and top and in each case, the box looked the same. He had some made up in metal instead of cardboard, of such a size as to take coins and so the "Okito Coin Box" was born. The Gypsy Thread trick is one of those classic effects in the same league as a linking ring or cups and balls. Lewis Ganson expertly and with care to minute details explains the famous six ring routine devised by Dai Vernon. Vernon first performed the entire routine in front of Ganson's cine camera. By studying the film in slow motion, they were able to determine the most suitable photographs to take with a still camera to illustrate the text.

Many considered the best and most beautiful routine for the Chinese Linking Rings. You can see Vernon perform this routine in Dai Vernon in Britain 1958.

This is a fascinating combination of biographical detail and carefully described magical secrets researched and recorded by Dai Vernon and Lewis Ganson.

Vernon was an intimate friend of Leipzig. Vernon not only saw many performances given by Leipzig, but Leipzig also explained Vernon in detail how all of his tricks worked and how they are to be performed. Vernon recorded this in his notebooks from which this publication was prepared by Ganson and Vernon. It is therefore fair to say that this is as close as you will ever get to learn from Leipzig.

This is a classic book, probably one of the best books on close-up magic ever written. Now available as an ebook with an improved layout. The original book had 448 photos grouped together in full-page photo plates. This meant that most photos were removed from the text which goes along with the photos. We have corrected this error in this digital edition. All photos have been inserted in the text where they are referred to.

Slydini was a genius of misdirection. Every movement and every word is deliberately chosen to direct the attention of spectators as well as to produce a graceful and engaging...

I was lucky that I stumbled across this book very early on in my magic development. It had a huge impact on how I approached magic and how I think today about magic. The introductory chapter "The Vernon Touch" should be mandatory reading for every magician. I would go so far as to recommend re-reading it every year.
