Animals in Magic & Conjuring

Pulling a rabbit out of a hat is one of the iconic images to depict a magician. Magicians have produced, vanished and transformed all kinds of animals over the centuries, including poetic dove acts of Jenning Pollock and Lance Burton, heart stopping productions of tigers by Siegfried and Roy and the historic vanishing of an Elephant by Houdini.

The Champion Pig of England by unknown

This is a lovely old-school children's story about a pig named Grunter Growler, his life on a farm, his animal as well as human friends, and his success winning 1st prize as the most beautiful pig in the country.

The interesting part for conjurers is that Grunter meets Toby the Learned Pig which includes a description of a typical performance of Toby. Those who study and research learned pigs might find it interesting. All learned pigs in England were named Toby. It is therefore not clear which Toby was the model for this description.

Hypnotising Animals by Supreme-Magic-Company

Very little on this fascinating subject has been published before, but you will find some references in Oriental Conjuring and Magic by Will Ayling and also in the books of Stanton Carlisle.

Let us make it quite clear that it is not possible to place an animal under genuine hypnosis. What you do is to induce a sort of muscular paralysis which has no ill effects on the animal subjects used. You will learn to do this for a variety of animals, including hens, roosters, rabbits, ducks, and even reptiles and frogs.

Ulysses Frederick Grant
Tricks with Hares by Ulysses Frederick Grant

Perhaps no other effect is so much associated with the magician as that of producing a rabbit from an empty hat. And, oddly enough, so few magicians today use a rabbit in their act.

Where the idea of producing a rabbit from a hat originated is not certain. The favorite story seems to be about the 18th century English woman who felt that she was not getting the attention she deserved. She told her husband and neighbors that she had been accosted by a rabbit and some time latter she took to her bed. The story immediately went out that she had given birth to several rabbits. The story naturally...
