Master Mentalism

Edwin A. French
Master Mentalism by Edwin A. French

A knock-out impromptu mentalism demonstration of answering audience questions. Can be worked solo, as a one-man effect, or by a crystal gazer, with an assistant, for use on the stage. Complete routine, with two methods described, and full opening lecture.

The original manuscript is very hard to find nowadays, being jealously hoarded by collectors. If you've wanted to perform a Q&A (question and answer) type of mental act, this title is one you should add to your library. In our opinion, the tips and suggestions from editor T. A. Whitney are alone worth the investment.

Flash Magic

Ulysses Frederick Grant & B. W. McCarron
Flash Magic by Ulysses Frederick Grant & B. W. McCarron

There are eight excellent effects in this updated ebook - plus a few variations - that you and your audiences will enjoy. Best of all, most can be made from materials found at discount and dollar stores. For example, Visible Silk Flight is a brilliant routine with a toy pop gun rifle and a colorful silk handkerchief that you can make up yourself. Just as good as a $150 dealer item. Or how about Lantern of the Air, a beautiful floating effect with a candle-lit Chinese paper lantern? You get two methods explained: one using an assistant and a second one for the one-person show. Or if it's comedy...

Two Little Gems

George Ernest Arrowsmith
Two Little Gems by George Ernest Arrowsmith

Two surprising card tricks based on a little known principle.

My Lady's Jewels

The performer starts with: "The story goes that a certain queen had some very valuable diamonds, and one day when she opened her jewel casket lo and behold some of them were missing. Summoning the court detective, she commanded him to trace the stolen gems and return them to her, and, being a very able sleuth his quest was soon accomplished. If you will take your own pack of cards and follow my directions, I will show you how he did it."

The cards having been produced (and emphasis is laid upon the fact...

Without Mirrors

Christopher Charles
Without Mirrors by Christopher Charles

Magicians and emcees know that comedy plays an important role in warming up today's audiences. No matter how great your tricks may be, if the spectators aren't laughing, they're not being entertained. Whether for TV, stage, casino floor show (night club), or lodge shows, Without Mirrors contains an excellent assortment of material to choose from to make you the center of attention.

Memorize two or three of the one-liners and you'll also be prepared to deliver an apparently ad-lib, off the cuff remark, just as the late-night TV hosts do. While you don't have a team of comedy writers like the...

Magic From Germany

Peter Wilker
Magic From Germany by Peter Wilker

From the introduction:

In English-speaking countries very little is known about magic in Germany, let alone in other countries like Poland, Switzerland or Spain. Unless a magician from one of these countries attends conventions in Britain or America regularly, and unless he speaks English, he will rarely be known. The two German magicians I want to talk about in these Lecture Notes - one from each side of the former Berlin wall - are perhaps the two best known in Germany today. Their names are Joro and Jochen Zmeck - how many of my readers, however, have ever heard of them?

Joro's real name is Bruno...

Edwin the Supreme Magician

Edwin Hooper
Edwin the Supreme Magician by Edwin Hooper

This is the story of Edwin, told in his own words and recorded by Martin Breese at the Supreme Magic Headquarters in Devon in the late 1970s.

Ian Adair, who provides a 10 min introduction before the interview with Edwin starts, wrote:

Edwin Hooper was a remarkable man. And when I say he spent a lifetime in magic, I really mean that. Day by day, hour by hour he was solely devoted to magic and magicians. He lived for magic. He loved performing and he loved creating magic. He thrilled at manufacturing magical equipment but, like us all, he had his likes and dislikes. Edwin really enjoyed his food....

Fun with String

Joseph Leeming
Fun with String by Joseph Leeming

A collection of string games, useful braiding weaving, knot work and magic with string and rope.

From the introduction:

Each and every one of us sees or uses pieces of string nearly every day. There are very few, however, who have been initiated into the wonderland of fascinating things that can be done and made with this commonplace article of daily use. Once one does discover the different things that can be made and the games that can be played with string, a new world is opened up. Anyone who once contracts a genuine case of "string fever" will have little difficulty in amusing himself...

A Helping of Punch

Neville Wiltshire
A Helping of Punch by Neville Wiltshire

From the foreword:

What I am writing is not for the beginner but for the man with a Punch show already, Many of these will, like myself, be semi-pros who do Magic as well. With Magic one can change ones show fairly easily and indeed this is necessary working in a small area with the same bookings coming in year after year.

It is not so easy to change a Punch show. Not a great deal has been written in the way of Novelty items. There are puppet plays which could be adapted especially those written in German for the puppet Kasper. The snag is that most of these are written for more than one...

worked. This is due to the fact that they are on the lookout for a sleight that is never employed by me. Needless to mention, the only originality claimed is for certain subtleties that I have introduced in the working of this trick which, old as it is, seems to be very little known among present-day magicians.

Effect:

The performer removes a small bottle from his pocket, opens it and pours four white beans onto the table. Immediately picking them up, he lays them on the palm of his left hand. With his right hand, he places one bean behind the lobe of each ear. The two beans that remain...

The Elusive Canary

it is not unusual to see a copy going for $65 or more. Many thanks to Lybrary.com for making it available. Mystic Craig's real name was William M. Vagell.

Those magicians who have a particular interest in the classic effect, The Vanishing Bird Cage, will be the primary audience for this book. I for one am glad to have access to this rare book as an e-book edition through Lybrary.com. For what it is as a historical piece , I'm rating this book 5-stars, but potential buyers should be aware that it is a slender volume (23 pages) and the subtitle: “The Last Word On Cages” is a bit of an exaggeration...

Mind Over Math

Tommaso Guglielmi
Mind Over Math by Tommaso Guglielmi

An impossible prediction.

Your spectator uses their own phone to fill a 3x3 grid with numbers 1-9 in completely random positions. They calculate the mathematical total themselves using their own choices, their own device, their own numbers. (Note: The input method is handwriting. To give you an idea, this is the app the spectator will use to manually fill out the 3x3 grid.)

Yet you've already predicted their exact result.

No apps to download. No gimmicked props. Pure mathematical impossibility.

Why this destroys audiences:

  • Their phone, their choices - eliminates every possible...

John Payne Collier

John Payne Collier(11th January 1789 – 17th September 1883)

John Payne Collier was an English writer and Shakespearean critic. He was also a forger who would pass off his own annotations and amendments as old ones. Scholars today still debate if Collier was rotten to the bone and everything he produced was a forgery or if this was to a large degree a conspiracy of dilettant upper-class folks against a hard-working enthusiast from the lower class. The truth often lies somewhere in the middle. While some of the annotations have been shown by scientific methods as forgeries, Collier also did a lot of valuable work in his compilations and republications of rare volumes.

L. C. Collier

L. C. Collier... loved magic competition because he believed the work involved in preparing for them made him a better magician. He was highly involved with the local SAM and IBM magic clubs and served as president and held various other board positions during his many years of active involvement in the clubs. At one time he acted as the Society of American Magicians special appointed liaison with the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

L.C. was not only a fine performer but a talented craftsman, before his involvement in magic he was an accomplished painter, designed and made jewelry, and carved wooden statues. He used those skills and others to build some of the finest magic props through his company...

Sh-h-h--! it's a secret by Ted Annemann

Annemann describes a wealth of forty pieces in this wonderful booklet. The first, "Call me up sometime" is a beautifully direct telephone miracle. This is a prime example of Annemann's mantra of 'effect before method'.

I found the following line from Annemann's introduction funny:

I like to do these things so well that someday I'm going to write a twenty page introduction and follow it with one trick! Trouble is, however, that after that harangue the trick will HAVE to be good.
