Topic: Magazines & Journals

... or if you just can't get enough to read, magazines are the best resource. Many famous magicians of the likes of Dai Vernon, Nate Leipzig or Ted Annemann left their early traces in journals. Few pleasures compare to reading old conjuring journals. The ones I can offer you here are some of the best magic magazines of all time. And comics - what can I say - they have to be seen to be appreciated.

If old magazines are not for you and you rather want to read a current up-to-date magic magazine then check out Magicseen. It has a great mix of interviews, effects, reviews, and news.

Topic: Balls, Eggs, Dice & Cups

Who does not know the famous egg bag trick which Malini performed to perfection or the classic Cups and Balls which are performed by magicians for hundreds of yeas? Manipulation with billiard balls is part of many of the best stage manipulation acts. You will also find in this category tricks with balls of the softer variety - sponge balls.

Topic: Hands, Fingers & Body

Regardless of where you are and what you have or don't have with you, you will always have your fingers, hands and body with you. And with them you can perform some exceptional magic tricks. Shadowgraphy needs a bit more than your hands. You will need a good light source and a white wall or screen. Shadowgraphy has been very popular in the past, has then fallen out of favor, but I can see some signs that it is again gaining momentum. With some thought one can put together a modern shadowgraphy act.

Topic: Science & Math Tricks

Science often appears like magic. Even some small physics or chemical experiment can be utterly baffling. Same is true with math. Some of the best self-working magic tricks have a mathematical foundation at heart. That is why particularly in the past magicians were often exhibiting the latest advances in science and technology as entertainment. For example, Robert-Houdin's "Heavy and Light Chest" was a simple application of an electromagnet. The projection of images and later moving images was mostly done by magicians in the early days of photography and film.

Topic: Patter, Plots & Scripts

What you say during your performance is probably more important than what you do, except of course if you are performing a silent act. However, most magicians focus on technique. Nothing wrong about spending a lot of time on moves, but spend at least the same amount of time on honing your presentation, what you say, when you say it and how you say it.

Topic: Catalogs

Catalogs constitute a very important record of history. It allows one to date tricks and effects, research the lineage of inventions and get a feeling of days gone by. Catalogs also inspire the imagination and exercise your magic knowledge. Reading an effect description in a catalog involuntarily makes you think about how this effect might be achieved. You start to think about methods and principles with which you could accomplish the same trick. And if you can't come up with a good answer you want to buy the trick. Wonderful!

Topic: Rings

The "Chinese Linking Rings" is a beautiful classic similar in strength and standing to the "Cups and Balls". Many famous performers have shared their interpretations with the magic fraternity and have contributed to the progress in ring handling.

But the Linking Rings effect is not the only thing rings have to offer. There are wonderful routines with fingerrings and routines with one ring and a piece of rope or ribbon where the ring links and unlinks in surprising and magical ways from a rope or ribbon.

Topic: Ropes, Ribbons, Strings & Reels

Today rubber bands are very popular and allow strong and effective illusions. David Copperfield popularized the "Crazy Man Handcuffs". I have consistently and repeatedly fooled friends with this little gem. The classic cut and restored string continues to be popular. A rope is a very common object. If you can do something magical with it, you have won your audience over.

You will also find here routines with invisible threads and loops.

Topic: Thimbles

Thimble magic was quite popular in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Some of the best manipulation acts had a thimble sequence. The first little trick I learned was with a thimble. Today it is the rare occasion to see a thimble act, which makes thimbles the more attractive. If you want to build a unique act, thimbles might be the right thing for you. On top of that, the manipulation of thimbles is much easier to learn than to manipulate cards, coins or balls.

Topic: Chapeaugraphy

What a clever concept. Take a felt ring. Fold it in various ways and put it on your head. Make appropriate faces, sing or speak, and you could have a blockbuster. It is like magic when the performer transforms from Napolean to nun, then to soldier, wizard and finishes as artist.

Topic: Liquids, Chemicals & Bottles

Magicians were always among the first to adopt new technologies, such as electricity as in the famous "Heavy Light Chest" invented by Robert-Houdin. Advances in chemistry are no different.
