At Ease (1966 - 1975)Harvey Turner
Who would have thought the US Armed Forces had a magicians association? The association was started by Opie Houston, then an Air Force Sergeant. At Ease was the organ of the Armed Forces Magicians Association. It ran from July 1966 until January 1975, but it had some gaps here and there and was not released on a particularly regular schedule.
Some of the trick contributors were Opie R. Houston, William E. Clover, Erwin M. Storke, Vernon Weiss, Bob Ford, Don Guilmain, Dave Richards, Harvey Turner, Kent Cummins, Ed Middleton, Prince Kazar, Jim Williams, Chas Crowley, John Guthrie, Arthur... | $39.50 to wish listPDF_facsimile |

Reviewed by Christian Fisanick One of the best things about studying mentalism is how creative people make use of old-hat ideas. When I was a teenager, worshipping at the Marlo/Vernon/Erdanse altar, my magician friends and I used to scoff at stuff like the Svengali Deck. Kids' stuff, we said. Look at that goof on TV selling the stupidest magic deck around. That crap fools no one. Everyone knows the secret. Also included is "Zauberkünste Triumph" a simple version of a Hofzinser effect. "The Viet Nam Card Trick" was routined by Bruce Cervon and Dai Vernon. No sleights, totally impromptu, and even fools magicians. "Do You Believe in Intuition" is a great routine for formal close-up shows. Sometimes spelling is used ( combined with mathmatic priciples ). Sometimes dealing is used to mix the cards ... etc. Standard sleights are not explained. Sleights like Elmsley count, Vernon Add-on, Faro, Reverse Faro ( even its not a move, but the term is used ), half pass and double lifts and false shuffles, are needed, but not explained. I loved some effects, and liked others. I know I won't use some of them though, because they look more like puzzles, than a magic effect. I'll... | ★★★★★ $15 to wish listPDF |

The most popular tricks are card tricks. Take a pack of cards and perform a miracle. Some of the masters whoes work you will find here are Dai Vernon, Tony Slydini, Roberto Giobbi and many many more. A pack of cards with its 52 pasteboards allows a shear infinite number of combinations and variations of card tricks. A philosophical question to ask would be if there are a finite number of card tricks possible or an infinite number. Looking at the amount of published card tricks it appears to be for all practical purposes infinite. Nevertheless the classic themes remain extremely popular and effective. It is hard to top a good ambitious card routine, card warp, oil and water, card to wallet... | |
