Annemann's Card Magic

Ted Annemann
Annemann's Card Magic by Ted Annemann

This book is actually two books: Ted Annemann's Full Deck of Impromptu Card Tricks and Annemann's Miracles of Card Magic. Annemann, perhaps more famous for his mental magic, was an extraordinary card man, a master of subtleties and misdirection. That is why most of the tricks in this collection do not require difficult moves, which does not mean that they are all easy to perform. His tricks have often the impromptu quality and can thus be performed without any prior preparation. You will also find contributions from such famous masters of card magic as Dai Vernon, Dr. Daley, Jean Hugard, Al Baker, Audley Walsh, Stewart Judah, and many others. ...

and have been unduly shadowed by the excellent michael Ammar's work on the effect. Stanyon however covers effects achieved with one all the way up to six balls. This is definitely a must for any magician interested into designing his own routine rather than just doing another presentation of Dai Vernon (who is entirely to be found in Jean Caroly's book dated 1900 except for the Mora wand spin)

At this price it's almost a theft of something invaluable

Travelers

Allan Ackerman
Travelers by Allan Ackerman

This is the classic travelers plot from Dai Vernon, based on a handling by Jon Racherbaumer with some changes by Allan Ackerman. The four aces are lost in the deck at four different locations. You then pull out one ace from your right jacket pocket, another ace from your breast pocket, the third one from your left jacket pocket and the fourth one is left in your hand while the rest of the packet has magically traveled to your jacket pocket.

Ackerman's All Backs

Allan Ackerman
Ackerman's All Backs by Allan Ackerman

This is a fun routine that first appeared in Allan's Magic Mafia book. It is based on a Dai Vernon plot from the 60s. However, a typical 'all backs' routine requires many moves - half passes and double lifts. Here Allan has engineered a routine with a lot less moves. You could even do this routine while maintaining a stacked deck.

You show a deck that consists of cards that have backs printed on the front and back. This changes then to faces on both sides of the cards until everything goes back to normal.

Vernon's Triumph

Allan Ackerman
Vernon's Triumph by Allan Ackerman

This is an all time classic routine first published in Stars of Magic developed by Dai Vernon. A card is selected, lost in the deck, and then cards are shuffled together face-up and face-down mixing them into a big mess. Magically all cards turn back face-down except the one chosen by the spectator which is found to be face-up in the center of the deck.

Ace-ta-mation

Ace-ta-mation by Allan Ackerman

This is one of Ed Marlo's best routines also sometimes called "Miracle Ace Cutting" and was first published in Faro Control Miracles. The patter Allan uses is from Dai Vernon and tells the story of a one handed gambler who miraculously can cut to the aces.

Twisting the Aces

Allan Ackerman
Twisting the Aces by Allan Ackerman

This is a tremendously visual effect developed by Dai Vernon using the Elmsley Count. The aces one by one turn face-up while the four aces are merely shown and counted. For the climax the black aces change place with the red aces while they are resting in the spectator's hand.

If you want an even more visual twisting effect, then take a look at Waving the Aces by Guy Hollingworth.

A Real Prediction

Michael Maxwell
A Real Prediction by Michael Maxwell

This effect was created by Dai Vernon and was published in Rufus Steele's book The Last Word on Cards.

The deck is shuffled by a spectator. The magician removes a prediction card from the deck and places it face down on the table. The spectator creates two piles. The top card of one is turned face up. The value of that card is used to count to a card in the other pile. The card counted to is the mate of the prediction.
