Way back in 1984 Stephen published a strange looking booklet on the 'Torn and Restored Card' effect called The Torn and Restored Card Book. Three routines formed the content, but the most striking thing about the publication was that the booklet was actually torn in half!

The Effect: A spectator freely selects a playing card and loses it in the deck. You then show two "magnet cards" and place them on top of the deck. Without any moves, a card is suddenly sandwiched between the magnets. It is not the selection, but suddenly changes into the freely selected card. A real magicians' fooler!

A spectator (freely!) selects a playing card as her lucky card and is also asked for the initials of her first love (no force!). The initials are written on a piece of paper and the lucky card is signed by the lady. The paper is placed onto the card and suddenly bursts into flames. When the lady turns over her lucky card, she finds that the initials of her first love have appeared on the back of her lucky card!

A spectator is asked to freely cut a shuffled deck of playing cards and hide the cut-off portion in his pocket, while the magician is standing far from the table with his head turned away.

The spectator puts the remaining cards back into the case and hands it to the magician. Without even looking at it, the magician weighs the card case in his hands. He is immediately able to tell the spectator the exact number of cards that are in the spectator’s pocket.

Just take out a deck of cards and a pen. Let them shuffle the cards. Then have them call out random digits and proceed to write them on the backs of the cards until you have marked about 30 or 40 cards (or even the whole deck). Fan the cards in front of you for only 5-10 seconds to remember the sequence. Hand the cards to the spectator who called out the final number. You are ready to go:

A spectator is given a new deck of cards and some clothes pegs. Tearing off the cellophane they open the deck and begin to peg cards onto a washing line. When they run out of pegs, they shuffle the deck and pick one card at random. This card helps them randomly choose one of the pegged cards.

Imagine there are 9 cards pegged to the line and they choose the 4 of diamonds - they would then count along the pegged cards stopping at the fourth card. This card is turned around and re-pegged so that the audience can see what it is.

A deck is borrowed from a spectator. The deck is shuffled by the spectator. They select a card and commit it to memory. Nothing is forced, no card is mentioned out loud.

A second spectator is thinking of any number between 1 and 52, the card is replaced and the deck is further mixed. Nothing is forced, no number is mentioned out loud.

Only after both spectators are satisfied with the random state of the deck are the freely chosen card and number named out loud (only if they want! This information can stay unknown to the performer the whole time.)

Phase 1: After a series of fair shuffles, a deck is spread and committed to memory by the performer. A spectator removes one card from the deck and places it in a different part of the spread. The performer correctly identifies both the selected card and the position it was moved from. This can be repeated several times.

Phase 2: The spectator chooses any suit, and without looking, the performer is able to call out the correct order of cards from the shuffled suit as the deck dealt out.
