The magician introduces a deck of cards to the audience. He produces two jacks from the deck, and explains that they are going to help the magician to find the selected card.

He then asks a volunteer to select any card from the deck. The card is signed, and lost somewhere towards the center of the pack.

The magician then starts to shake the two jacks above the pack, and something amazing happens. One card materializes in between the two jacks. Unfortunately the card sandwiched in between the two jacks is the wrong card.

Effect:

A deck of cards is removed from its case and shuffled. The magician spreads the deck face up and asks a spectator to touch any card. All of the cards are different and this is truly a free choice. You probably have not heard the name David Gemmell, unless perhaps you are living in Wales. But I am sure you will hear a lot more about him. David is a 30 year veteran of card magic. Surprisingly little has been published in an encyclopedic form about the classic rising cards in English. You can find some in Greater Magic but the rest is spread out in many books and journals. Although this publication can hardly be called an encyclopedia, it is one of only two publications in English I know which are entirely dedicated to the rising card effect (the other being 25 Rising Card Tricks). It is a wonderful collection of a number of methods, described clearly with photos and illustrations. This was part of the Supreme 'Know How' series.

Magicians always do card tricks. Why not do something more than just a card trick that will blow everyone's mind? For example, take any two playing cards from the deck, and fold them into 2 little supports. Take the ordinary card box and place it on top of them. This may not seem impressive yet...until you remove one of the structures leaving an impossible image in your spectators mind!

Or perhaps take a pencil and place it onto an ordinary pop can, and on the end of the pencil place the card box leaving a totally impossible image that just can't be explained. All...
