Paper & Paper Money

Paper folding, paper tearing and tricks with paper money are at the heart of this section. I am fascinated by paper. I consider it one of the most important inventions. You might not see it that way, but paper is a hightech product. Paper machines are pretty much the largest and most complicated manufacturing installations in use by humankind. Paper comes in all shapes and sizes and is ideal for customization with a slogan for your next corporate gig or a personal message. Vanishing a dollar bill or changing it into a hundred dollar bill will always garner respect and admiration. It is human nature.

(Benny) Ben Harris

Alida: Little Winged One by (Benny) Ben Harris
"A cool and animated levitation of a card or dollar bill... EASY TO MAKE!"
My goodness, this little effect created a shit-storm when it was released in 2000! I don't think the attacks had been so brutal since Cosmosis (in the mid 1980s). Anyway, this simple and effective idea was loved by some (see, for example, Richard Kaufman in Genii Magazine), and hated by others (see, for example, Michael Close in Magic Magazine). Ben relishes dividing opinion, and Alida certainly did that.

However, it was also a genuine stepping stone in the thought processes that would eventually lead to Enlightenment: The Ultimate Floating Card - which is way superior. So, controversial...

Paul Romhany

Almost Impossible Bill to Can by Paul RomhanyTen years ago Paul Romhany caused a stir in the magic fraternity when he performed his original Impossible Bill To Can routine on national television. He was accused of using stooges because the routine was that impossible. However what magicians did not know was that Paul had worked out a routine that did not use stooges. In 2007 Paul released the exact routine and version he used on the TV show on a DVD and is still available from most magic dealers.

This new version is an alternative Bill To Can routine which in many ways is more practical for most working conditions. This routine is...

Devin Knight

Around the Square by Devin KnightA new and novel paper effect! Do not confuse this with the old Squircle effect. Although similar, this is a greatly improved version. A double sheet of newspaper is shown on both sides. It is folded into quarters and a small 2" square is cut from a folded corner. (In the original Squircle, a double sheet of newspaper is folded in half and a semicircle is cut out.) The 2" square is unfolded showing it is actually a 4" inch square.

The double sheet of newspaper is partly unfolded. Instead of the expected rectangular shape, the audience sees a semicircle! (You cannot do this with the old Squircle.)...

Samuel Berland

Berland's Bill Tear Secrets by Samuel BerlandPerhaps the best torn and restored bill effect the magical world has ever seen.

A magical inspiration that comes once in a blue moon. A sensation of the I.B.M. and S.A.M. conventions. After you've read the following effect, you'll say it's impossible. And so will your audience, when they see you perform this bill tear.

Effect: The performer reaches into his wallet and removes a dollar bill. To preclude the possibility of exchange or duplicates, the performer requests someone in the audience to mark the bill in any manner they wish. His hands are carefully shown to be empty. There is no...

Bill Burner Clear by Ron JaxonEffect

A borrowed and signed bill is wrapped around a clear cigarette lighter and held in place with a rubber band. The magician is able to cause the bill to vanish from or appear back on the lighter at will. The vanished bill can appear anywhere the magician chooses.

What makes this effect so stunning is the fact that it's done with a clear lighter. When the bill vanishes they can see right through it so there's no way the bill can be somehow hidden under or in the lighter. The magicians hands are also completely empty.

  • Very easy to do.
  • A very visual and impossible vanish.

An Arthur Setterington original that's a sensation ... clean, easy, visual magic that has impact.

The magician draws attention to a stapled envelope hanging from two clips in a nicely lacquered wood and metal skeleton frame, in complete isolation. He requests the loan of a bill a $1, $5, $10, $100 - a £1, £5, £50 - it doesn't make any difference. Center Tear Bill by Jack ChaninOne of the best impromptu tricks ever invented for an unprepared dollar bill, invented by the late Jack Chanin. Long off the market. This charming bit of magic is almost forgotten today. This sold in the 70s for $10.00. According to Dollar Times that would be over $60 in today's dollars.

You show an unprepared dollar bill and fold it into quarters. At the folded corner of the bill you tear off a section, as shown on the cover photo. The audience plainly sees the missing section.
