Hideo Kato

Hideo Kato(6th May 1943 - )

When Hideo was thirteen years old, he purchased a book of card magic for beginners but he didn't have a deck of cards. He went to a department store to buy one and asked a saleslady, 'Where can I buy a deck of cards?' She asked, 'What are you going to use it for?' he answered, 'To perform magic.' She pointed to a corner of the store where there was a Tenyo Magic Counter. He had never known that magic apparatus was sold to the general public. He bought a set of Multiplying Billiard Balls and both marked and stripper decks. This was the beginning of his magic career.

He went to work part-time as a magic demonstrator for Tenyo when he was nineteen years old while attending...

T. G. Murphy

T. G. MurphyAt an early age, T.G. demonstrated exceptional skill at games of chance, particularly card games. In grade school he scourged the seniors, in high school he frequented the fraternities, in college he challenged the career businessmen, and in graduate school he gallivanted to the gaming tables of Las Vegas.

Learning from observing cheats in action, T.G. discovered and mastered the mechanics of the cardsharps as well as developed his own unrivaled style of shearing the sheep for slaughter. If provoked by being cheated, he believed it was open season, and could he ever lay a trap.

T.G. later decided that gambling and especially cheating were not in the cards. He believed that nerves of...

Cameron Francis

Cameron Francis... entranced by the shiny boxes, rice bowls, colorful silks in the pages within. On weekends, Cameron would beg his father to drive him to the magic store where he would spend all of his hard earned allowance money on whatever exotic props he could afford. From elementary school up until he left for college, Cameron put these props to good use and performed his share of birthday parties, school events and Cub Scout meetings. During college, however, magic fell to the wayside as he spent more time focusing on becoming an actor (Plus it was really hard to get a date wearing a ruffled shirt and black cape).

One day, while attending graduate school in Washington D.C., Cameron stumbled into a...

... and a Pack of Cards

Jack Merlin
... and a Pack of Cards by Jack Merlin

This publication is in my opinion among the best books on cards ever written, but it is rarely mentioned or recommended. I am not sure why this is. Perhaps one reason is that Jack Merlin himself has not left a large footprint in the magic literature besides this one publication. He has a published trick in Expert Card Technique and if you read Card College 1 you will have learned the Jack Merlin's Riffle Shuffle. Farelli mentions in his Farell's Card Magic: "I agree with Mr. Jack Merlin that the custom of continually practicing in front of a glass is the cause of the unfortunate habit many magicians have of blinking at the precise moment of performing...

Basic, Basic Card Magic

Paul Hallas
Basic, Basic Card Magic by Paul Hallas

Where to start and what's important.

This is a well thought out and compact introduction to card magic by Paul Hallas. He teaches you the most important sleights and tricks that go along with these sleights.

From the introduction:

If you learn a sleight, learn a trick to do with it. Don't learn moves you have no tricks for, what is the point? Better to know a few moves that you can do many effects with than many moves that you are not sure what to use for. Just like magicians have drawers full of tricks they never use why fill up your mind with moves (and waste time learning them)...

One minute you are half – listening to the complex and uninteresting audio, which almost is depicted internally as a haze...
