(April 15, 1957 - )

Peter first became fascinated by magic at the age of eight after his uncle showed him some magic tricks using cards, coins, matches and chalk. But it was the cards that held his deepest interest, and so began a learning process that continues to the present day.

Peter’s chief mentor was, and still is, Roy Walton. Others whom he met and had a profound influence on his path include, Gordon Bruce, Andy Galloway, Tommy Frederick, Fred Robinson, Dave Campbell, Eric Mason, Ken Brooke, Peter Kane, Alex Elmsley, Pat Page, Phil Goldstein, Gene Maze, Richard Kaufman and Dai Vernon.

A past winner of the Scottish Conjuror’s Association Close-up competition and the British Ring Zina Bennett Cup, Peter considers competitions "good fun but meaningless."

His early association with Jerry Sadowitz led to a series of books, beginning with Alternative Card Magic (1982). It started with two young men - a manuscript - and no publisher. Peter is grateful that Martin Breese saw in the material what others didn't, and took the chance. All five Duffie/Sadowitz books have recently been reprinted by Martin Breese in a single collection titled Cardzones - a handsome cloth-bound tome. While the material dates back to the 1980's, Peter is proud of this collection.

The 1990's saw a new direction with the release of Imagine, a self-produced manuscript of near-self-working card tricks. This was followed by Obsession, Ulterior Motifs, and so it went on, and indeed, Peter continues to release new booklets to this day.

In the mid-90's, a chance encounter with Richard Kaufman at a Blackpool convention led to a publishing contract being signed. Duffie's Card Compulsions was published in 1995 by Kaufman and Greenberg. This was followed by Five Time Five (Scotland) and Effortless Card Magic.

Peter is currently in partnership with the clever Californian magician Robin Robertson. Together they have created over 200 new effects and recently released Card Conspiracy Vols. 1 and 2. A third book is planned.

Coauthors: Robin Robertson, Jerry Sadowitz, Cameron Francis, Aldo Colombini

Thunder Struck by Peter DuffieA card is selected, signed and lost back into the deck. Taking only the 4 Jacks (deck discarded), you perform the cleanest of Twisting routines - with the Jacks reversing one by one with no false counts.

The black Jacks are now placed into the card case - there is no doubt at all that they do go into the case - leaving the red Jacks, "These will now magically produce your signed card." The spectator holds the red Jacks but nothing happens. Or does it. On turning his two cards over he finds he is now holding the black Jacks! Finally, you tip out the cards from the card case revealing the...

Decknology by Peter DuffieDelusion Assembly
You remove any three "magic" cards from the deck - say, an Ace, Two and Three - and place them aside. You now cut to the four Kings, placing them on the table in a diamond formation as you find them. Next, you pick up the three "magic" cards and drop them on top of one of the Kings. Instantly, the Kings assemble in this pile and the three "magic" cards are found where the other three Kings were. There is no palming and no hidden/extra cards involved.

"Deckless" Delusion Assemble
In this version of the above, the four Kings and three magic cards are removed from the deck...

Devious Dates by Peter DuffieUse any pocket diary. Completely self-working. No reset.

Effect: To begin, you hand a spectator your diary for examination - you point out that each day in the diary has the name of a playing card entered against it. This he can verify as he studies the diary, before putting it in his pocket. (Note: it doesn't need to be playing cards - you can fill the diary with anything you desire - people's names, phone numbers, words, symbols, etc.)

Next you bring out six blank business cards. You write something on one of the cards, without showing it to the audience. This card is left on the table...

Trance Fusion by Peter DuffieThe two Jokers are removed from the deck. Two cards are then selected. One by one the selections are placed between the Jokers and are then stretched to twice their length.

Now, both cards are placed between the Jokers after which they fuse into one examinable two-faced card that can be given to the spectator as a keepsake.

Finally the other cards are tossed onto the table and are seen to have become totally blank!

Based on brilliant ideas by Peter Kane, Richard Kaufman, David Arthur & Gene Maze, this is a killer. Watch the demo below.

7 by Peter DuffieAutomatic Gambler
Created in October 2000 (along with Klectors that is elsewhere in this book) as an impromptu performance piece for the International Magic convention in December of that year. You demonstrate how to stack 4 Aces for a four-handed game. Then, you drop the Aces face up on top of the deck and they instantly vanish. You immediately give the deck to a spectator who now deals, not 4 but 5 hands this time. The face up Aces fall to his hand!

Double Jeopardy by Peter DuffieA card at any number! But the number is predicted in advance! Watch the demo video below.

The performer removes a card that has plenty of white space on its face from the deck – say, the Two of Hearts - and writes a prediction on the face of this card with a marker pen. The prediction is left face down on the table. A spectator now selects a card from the deck (say the JS), after which the card is lost back into the deck. The deck is now given to a second spectator who - only now - names ANY number. To keep the routine moving along you suggest he thinks of any number between 1 and 30. He...

Effortless Card Magic by Peter DuffieEffortless is probably just as apropriate or misleading as self-working. It doesn't mean that these tricks don't require any effort on your side. You have to read the descriptions, remember the sequence of actions and perform the act - entertain, which in my book is neither self-working nor effortless. But what these terms try to convey is that you will not need to master difficult moves or finger breaking sleights to perform these effects. And they are very good effects. Often an 'effortless' trick can be performed to greater effect because the performer can pay more attention to audience managment,...

Mind Master by Peter DuffieFor almost 10 years this has been Peter's biggest selling trick in Europe & the USA.

You give a spectator a small pocket diary. From a choice of over sixty names written on cards, a second spectator mentally selects a husband and wife. The choice is free; there is no force of any kind.

You (or a spectator) read out a letter that has been in full view from the beginning. The letter reveals the date of the couple's wedding. The first spectator opens the diary to that date. For the first time, the second spectator announces the names he is thinking of. Let's say it's Mr. and Mrs. Ford. Spectator...

Cardeceits by Peter DuffieTwenty fine card tricks.

1st edition, 2003.

A Pain in the Ace: You push a selected card into the middle of the deck - it rises to the top. You push it back into the middle and flip over the top card. Unfortunately it's not the selection. It's an Ace. You - or a spectator - give the deck a fair cut to bury the face up Ace in the middle. Upon spreading the deck all four Aces are now face up together in the middle - but there's one face down card caught in the middle. This proves to be the awkward selection.

The ROLEX Gang: You remove the four Aces then place a random card between them....

Untold by Peter DuffieFifteen clever tricks with cards.

1st edition, 2002.

SEVEN DOWN: Seven Down was inspired by Ed Marlo's "Magic Seven."

DRAW POKER: This trick came about as a direct result of a conversation with Roy Walton, who had a card problem which he quickly solved and published in OPUS.

FALLING: The following routine is based on Roy Walton's superb "Cascade". Here several Jumbo cards are caused to mutate in a bizarre and visual manner. This was originally called "The Mutant Hand," but I changed the title for this ebook in view of the recently marketed Cascade variation "Mutanz" to avoid confusion with names.

Card School by Peter Duffie1st edition, 1995.

ILLUSION Versus REALITY: This is a direct and magical production of the four Aces, with two of the Aces seemingly appearing in the hands of a spectator.

THREESIGHT: A simple, but effective, prediction using the Gilbreath Principle.

IN PLACE: This simple trick is an ideal one to perform for anyone at a moment's notice. It uses what is often referred to as the Automatic Placement.

CENTRAL RESERVATIONS: This is essentially a small packet version of Paul Curry's "Power of Thought," and a possible miracle single card prediction.

TRANS-VERSE CARDS: In an attempt to cause two cards to...

THOSE ENIGMATIC ROYALS: A simple idea based on the Vernon 'Card Puzzle' and inspired by Peter Kane's 'Royal Families' from his booklet A Further Card Session, plus Roy Walton's "Split Up" from The Complete Walton, Vol.1.

A SENSE OF FREEDOM: This is based on a number prediction by Shigeo Futagawa using four pieces of cardboard (See "Stunumbers" in Karl Fulves' Self-Working Number Magic, Dover). The only weak point was that the prediction couldn't be written until an advanced stage in the proceedings. The following effect uses playing cards and there is no need to worry about the prediction because...
