This ebook is a reproduction of the original instruction booklet that came with the Neyhart houlette. It describes operation and care as well as several performance ideas and ways to use the houlette. The Neyhart houlette appeared in the 1930s and made a big splash at the 1935 IBM convention. It is an ingenious device that allows you to let any card named rise out of a 52 card deck - no stooges, threads or electronics.

It is also further described in Samuel Cox Hooker and his Rising Cards and The Big Book of Rising Cards. Other rising card methods can be learned from Knowing the Rising Cards.

New Era Card Tricks is the masterpiece of Roterberg's publishing efforts. Scholars are pretty sure that the elusive Erdnase must have known and read this book. It is still today an extremely good and important work on cards. It is a book any serious card man should read. This is to a large part the foundation on which a lot of the later card work has been built. A good part of this book is essentially a translation of the German work Der Moderne Kartenkünstler by Friedrich W. Conradi. Richard Hatch wrote a wonderful introduction that by itself is worth reading. He starts:

Barry could say this has taken 25 years in the making. And it would be true! In the latter part of the 1980’s, Barry created Deceptive Diary, and in 1990, he marketed this effect. This is a very subtle method to find a freely chosen (not forced) card. It needs some prior preparation, but the deck (cards) are not altered in any way. After the effect there is nothing left to detect and the cards can be handed out or given away.

This is not a card trick, it's a trick with cards.

The spectator freely selects, signs and returns the card from a shuffled deck. The illusionist explains that card tricks have become too complicated, and he wants to keep it simple and use just the selected card. The magician picks up the card case, still holding the deck, and shows the card case at all sides and completely empty.

The magician then places the deck square on the face of the card case. The front of the card case can be clearly seen as the cards are being placed. The card case with the deck on top is placed...

This is a 'cards through case' effect, but completely different than older versions. This effect takes a classic stage illusion and puts it in the spectator's hands.

Four random cards are selected by the spectator. The four cards are placed inside a card case and given to the spectator to hold at their fingertips.

Three of the four cards are removed, leaving the final card inside of the card case. The remaining three cards are then pushed through the side of the card case and the selected card.
