This was the publication that taught me the Three Card Monte many years ago. It has all you ever need on this wonderful performance piece - and then some.

Erdnase writes in Expert at the Card Table:

"There is not a single card feat in the whole calendar that will give as good returns for the amount of practice required, or that will mystify as greatly, or cause as much amusement, or bear as much repetition as this little game!

Al Koran convinced Rovi that it was the easy-to-follow plot with a strong magical impact for which there appeared to be no explanation, that had the greatest impression on audiences. Rovi has followed that dictum with great success, devising routines of his own, all of which are styled to entertain. Those readers who expect to have to learn difficult sleights or memorize long sequences of moves, can breathe a sigh of relief. Rovi's magic is not like that, it is based on simplicity and subtlety.

When Lewis Ganson asked Dai Vernon what he considered to be the best card effect, he replied that in his opinion "Matching The Cards" would be difficult to beat, particularly when performed for lay audiences. His opinion is shared by many of the world's leading card experts, who have often featured one version or another in their acts.

The granddaddy of this effect can be found in Magician's Tricks by Hatton and Plate. The effect of Vernon's version is as follows:

A card is selected by a spectator and placed face down on the table without the face being shown, then the performer endeavors to cut to the three other...

Surprisingly little has been published in an encyclopedic form about the classic rising cards in English. You can find some in Greater Magic but the rest is spread out in many books and journals. Although this publication can hardly be called an encyclopedia, it is one of only two publications in English I know which are entirely dedicated to the rising card effect (the other being 25 Rising Card Tricks). A spectator (freely!) selects a playing card as her lucky card and is also asked for the initials of her first love (no force!). The initials are written on a piece of paper and the lucky card is signed by the lady. The paper is placed onto the card and suddenly bursts into flames. Please note that the instructions are purely visual, no spoken words.

This is a very subtle method to find a freely chosen (not forced) card. It needs some prior preparation, but the deck (cards) are not altered in any way. After the effect there is nothing left to detect and the cards can be handed out or given away.

The method to locate the chosen card is not sleight-of-hand based. But to present it properly you will need some basic card handling skills such as shuffling, cutting, and spreading cards. Depending on how you choose to produce the chosen card you may need to be able to cull...

This is an amazing semi-automatic A.C.A.A.N. effect (the acronym stands for: Any Random Card At Any Numbers' Sum), requiring no stooges or any sophisticated technique.

A case containing a deck of cards is placed by the magician in full view on the table, even before the effect begins. Spectators are asked to point to a card, starting with the suit and then deciding its value through two absolutely free choices of their own.
