As with Wesley's previous releases, M.I.N.T. III - M.I.N.T. V, these long-unavailable Marlo articles could have been all Wesley compiled. Such a volume would have been an important contribution to the literature of card magic. As a tribute to Ed, Wesley wanted these volumes to offer more. So, Wesley has added, as he has with the other volumes, clarifications, corrections - both logical and grammatic - plus his own personal Notes. Some Notes are complimentary, some critical, some revolutionary, all are highly informative. ...

Back Palming

Dr. John D. Bain
Read more about Back Palming by Dr. John D. Bain

A detailed explanation and breakdown of how to back palm a playing card.

The author shows the aspiring card magician how to make playing cards appear and disappear from and into thin air using a sleight-of-hand technique known as back palming. Many photos assist in comprehending this at-first difficult-looking move. But with a bit of practice, it is within reach for any dedicated student.

This technique is typically used on stage but it can also delight in an impromptu setting close-up and it can be done with other thin flat objects besides playing cards, such as business cards, credit...

Excerpt from the Preface:

No skill, no sleights, no manipulation is required to perform the following effects. Many are impromptu, making use of anyone's cards, and needing no preparation or make-ready. Others admittedly depend upon such chicanery as cards with double faces and blank faces, double backs and blank backs, roughing fluid and other aides, all available from magic shops. Many skilled manipulators have not hesitated to use such artifices, so the reader should not scorn them.

Aside from whatever merit these tricks may possess, it is believed their greatest value lies in the...

An automatic and practically impromptu card magic effect that requires an unusual deck of poker cards whose simple preparation is done in front of the audience, if not by entrusting it to a spectator.

For each of the four suits, figures (Jack, Queen, King) and Aces are drawn, stacking them neatly in four different bundles, to represent the aristocratic members of the city's four important houses, who would like to return to being well-liked by their citizenry.

For this purpose, the two Jokers are hired as "image consultants," and their first piece of advice is that each of the members...

An impromptu mentalism effect involving a merely thought card, chosen from aces and figures, and in which, despite the possibility of the spectator lying, the real truth will always be revealed by the Magician.

Truth Bites is a mentalism effect but also a packet trick always ready when needed, where a spectator thinks of a card that could be one of the four aces or any figure in the deck (Jacks, Queens or Kings). She will also secretly choose a role to play: Knight, who will always tell the truth, or rogue who, on the contrary, will lie all the time.

The spectator is asked to cut the deck randomly into four packets. The four Aces are placed on top of each packet. The packets are reassembled. Most importantly, the tricks had to be totally impromptu with no set-ups. Eventually he did, however, allow a few easy moves such as a card control, a force or a simple sleight; moves that still are very easy to master and perform.

Tricks are organized into the following categories. The last one is a section on simple sleights and procedures:

  • The Four Aces
  • Amazing Coincidences
