Will Goldston's Easy Road to Magic: in seven lessonsWill GoldstonFrom the introduction: The ideal way of learning magic is, it almost goes without saying, to obtain lessons from a magician who is not only a skilful performer but who has also the gift of teaching. The number of such magicians is small. Skilful performers there are in plenty; but the gift of teaching is a rare one. Many a man knows his subject thoroughly, yet cannot impart his knowledge to others. This ideal way is therefore a difficult one. The learner has first to find an efficient instructor. He may be able to do so if he lives in or near one of the great cities. But if not he will... | $10 to wish list
The Young Conjurer Part 1Will GoldstonFrom the introduction: Before the young conjurer sets out to try and entertain his friends he should first devote a little time every day to practice. I always believe in a little practice every day. Every trick that one is going to present should be rehearsed over and over again until one is practically tired of it. When the conjurer knows a trick in that way he finds, when he is presenting it to an audience, that he is by no means tired of it, because the trick goes so well that he is bound to like it and it probably becomes one of his favourite tricks.

The Young Conjurer Part 2Will GoldstonIt is a bit odd to teach productions of lighted cigarettes in a book for young conjurers, but perhaps those were the days when smoking was considered good for you. From the introduction: That brings me to another point. Don't be afraid of a mistake, and don't allow yourself to be discouraged by one. The best men make mistakes sometimes. Still, it is as well to guard against mistakes by rehearsals. Take one trick at a time and go over it many times until you know it thoroughly. Then - and not till then - go on to another trick. In this way you will soon build up quite a little store of... | $5 to wish list

From the Introduction: To make this work more attractive than the general run of books on Magic, the following articles have been introduced: - Hypnotism, Smoke Pictures, Hand Shadowgraphy, Elocution, Art of Making-up, Hoop Rolling, Ventriloquism, Stage Illusions, Lock Tricks, etc., in conjunction with Conjuring.

Great Tricks RevealedWill GoldstonFrom the introduction by Horace Goldin: The present book is, I think, one of Will Goldston's best perhaps - the best. I am quite certain that the man who cannot learn magic from this book will never be a magician. All kinds of tricks are clearly explained and, to make quite sure that his readers will understand every word, the author has supplemented his clear explanations of tricks with numbers of equally clear illustrations. Looking through the book I find that in many places the letterpress is hardly necessary; the pictures "do the trick". I should like to add a word of advice to any young man who... | ★★★★★ $10 to wish list
Tricks that MystifyWill GoldstonExcerpt from the introduction: In this book I deal with the latest and best small tricks. The majority of the professional conjurers to-day are presenting small tricks in their programmes. I have been asked by subscribers not to include illusions requiring stage traps, but to confine myself to secrets of tricks that can be done by the average performer, and the apparatus not to be costly. I have taken care to meet with the wishes of all subscribers to this book. I have omitted complicated tricks and combinations likely to fog an audience. The magician to-day understands that he must be... | $9.50 to wish list
Magical Hints and Valuable InformationWill GoldstonProgrammes, ventriloquial dialogues, juggling, cartooning, paper folding, care of animals and birds. Excerpt from the introduction: The suggestions for suitable programmes for different occasions form a unique feature of this book. Many books of magic give away secrets of tricks but leave the reader to judge for himself which tricks should be shown to children, which to adults if children are present, which to an audience of adults, and so on. By suggesting the right tricks for different occasions I trust I have helped some readers along the difficult road to success. After all, if the road... | $9.50 to wish list
Tricks You Should KnowWill GoldstonThis book is the trick section of Sensational Tales of Mystery Men. Goldston felt that the trick section was the part that magicians would be most interested in and thus made it available as a separate book. And a very good title too! The magician who does not know the contents of this volume will soon be behind the times.

Great Magicians' TricksWill GoldstonThis is an interesting compilation of material - a mix of short portraits and Goldston's personal recollections of various magicians - some famous, some not, as well as some of their tricks and secrets. The first edition was issued in the same style as Goldston's famous Locked Books series, but without the clasp. Excerpt from the introduction: Great Magicians' Tricks is divided into two complete parts, "Magicians of the Past" and "Modern Magicians."... | $25 to wish list
A Little Magic Among FriendsWill DexterExcerpt from the Preface: So it's a mixed bag. But all the tricks have one thing in common; each can be performed to a small audience in the home. One or two (I have "Pseudo-Graphology" and "Question and Answer" especially in mind) are good for performance to a larger audience, as well as to just half a dozen friends. Every one has been thoroughly tried out and is practical and entertaining. According to your personality and style, I am sure you will find something in this book to entertain your audiences.

Effective ConjuringWill BlythFrom the introduction: Every item has been presented by the author, not only before the general public, who may generally be relied on to give audible expressions of their likes and dislikes, but also before meetings of conjurers, where candid criticism has resulted in filling up several possible pitfalls and leaving everything fairly even and workable. Most of my previous works on conjuring have dealt with specific subjects, such as paper, match-sticks, handkerchiefs, coins, etc. The present volume, however, contains a variety of useful effects which, if presented with due regard to the... | ★★★★★ $15 to wish list
Oriental Conjuring and MagicWill Ayling & Sam SharpeThis ebook is almost an encyclopedia of Indian, Chinese and Japanese magic. It consists of two parts. The first part is an index, reference and bibliography compiled by Sam Sharpe. The second part, researched and written by Will Ayling, describes all 101 effects from Sharpe's index. You will learn about fantastic effects such as buried alive, sword swallowing, pulse stopping and snake charming. But it is not all about geek magic. There is also a lot of close up magic, stage magic and illusions. The 101 effects described are:

Fabian's Magic NotesWill AylingFrom the preface: Fabian's contributions to the Supreme House Journal The MAGIGRAM, the items edited and photographed by the Late Lewis Ganson, will be well known to so many magicians throughout the World. Acknowledged for their novelty, routine and presentation, the tradition is continued within these pages, the effects forming the lecture notes of Colombini. The items are described and photographed in detail so that the reader may be able to duplicate the tricks etc., without actual recourse to the lecture itself.

The Secret OutWiljalba FrikellThere is quite some confusion about this book, because there are American editions and British editions, some only with card magic, others with additional chapters on cups and balls and other non-card magic effects. The book we have reproduced was printed in London and it does include non-card items. We are reproducing the complete table of contents below. This book was edited by W. H. Cremer as noted in the preface of Hanky Panky. PRELIMINARY PART I. - GENERAL TRICKS

Magic no MysteryWiljalba FrikellConjuring tricks with cards balls, and dice; magic writing, performing animals, etc. This is a surprisingly interesting book edited by W. H. Cremer. It includes an early precursor of the Chop Cup. (See The Magic Dutch Balls.) It has interesting information on gambling, cheating, and scams. The chapter on 'Magic Writing' is a wonderful history of cryptography and steganography. The chapter on animal training is one of the most detailed I have encountered. It also includes a wealth of magic tricks, science experiments, and effects based on apparatus.

Mr. Smith's Guide to Sleight of HandWilfrid JonsonThis guide is written in an unusual style, a conversational style, where each lesson starts with "Dear Mr. Smith", like a letter to a fictional student. This feature makes it a very readable and valuable course. In the introduction Jonson writes: The guide is presented to the reader in the form of a course of personal instruction and the majority of the sleights and tricks are described according to the manner in which I have myself performed them. A number of individual touches and personal inventions have been introduced which I consider to be improvements on previously published methods.... | $10 to wish list
Secrets of the Street ConjurerWilfred Huggins & Frederic CulpittA collection of conjuring secrets for magicians who entertain when surrounded by spectators. Excerpt from the preface: The compilation of "A Street Conjurer's Secrets" is the outcome of many years of observation in this country, Australia, America, France and Germany. That the effects are well-known is not to be denied, but it is extremely doubtful if many conjurers are aware of the actual method used by the street entertainer.
