In February of 1986, David Ben and I sponsored a lecture by Gaetan in Toronto. It turned out to be a fabulous evening of magic. Towards the end, Gaetan demonstrated a monte routine which used what he claimed was a new kind of trick card. There were about 150 people in the audience and as I was standing at the back of the hall I couldn't really see what was going on. I didn't pay attention.

The magician asks for a card to be selected and also takes out the joker. After the selection has been noted and signed he buries the card inside the deck and places the deck on the table. He riffles the inner edge with his thumb and suddenly flicks the face up joker into the deck. The face up joker is seen to stick out at a certain portion of the deck until the very last moment before it is pushed in flush with the deck and the deck is immediately spread to show that the joker landed right next to the selection. The Effect: The magician removes a pack of cards from its packet and hands it out for shuffling and cutting. He also gives a sealed envelope to another spectator for safe keeping. The shuffled deck is passed to someone else who is instructed to deal seven cards on to the hand of the person seated next to him. The performer reclaims the balance of the pack then asks the spectator to fan the seven cards he holds faces towards himself.

On August 2nd, 1982, Martin Breese organized a John Mendoza lecture, which was taped for later release as a video. But Martin being the busy publisher he was had so many other projects to work on that he never got around releasing this recording. We rescued the recording from two old Umatic tapes Martin gave to me. Since this was recorded in the early 80s do not expect a high definition video. But it is nevertheless a good recording of Mendoza's lecture. The video has some flaws here and there with stripes, ghost images, and an occasional blackout. The audio track has no noticeable blackouts or problems....

You reveal a freely thought card.

EFFECT: Spectator freely selects several cards from his own shuffled deck and thinks of one. Those are returned and mixed in the pack. By means of "tuned thought-waves" the performer discovers the very card spectator is thinking of and, either names it dramatically, or causes it to obey his command in a distinctly "unique" manner. A real mental mystery.

Signed card into envelope, using a novel method which eliminates all difficult sleight-of-hand.

This concept enables you to steal and load a signed card into an envelope which has been in full view all the time. The signed card is placed into a clear box with a lid, this is placed into a larger carton box with a lid, and all is encircled with a rubber band. Still, you are able to extract the card. The load into the envelope is done in full view, and can be used without the box steal, as well.

In one of the New York Magic Symposium volumes there is a trick by Brother John Hamman entitled "The Lie-Detector Card Case". In it, he describes a truly brilliant-in-its-simplicity method for discovering a merely-thought-of card. Here is an alternative ending to it which, for me, makes it easier for larger audiences to see.

EFFECT

A spectator shuffles a pack of cards, then merely thinks of a card as the performer counts some over before his eyes. The cards are shuffled, then the performer shows the cards at the top and bottom of the pack; the selected card is not among them. Next, he introduces two paper...

Have a spectator select a card (for one version it is a free choice, for a second version it has to be forced), have it signed, apparently loose it in the deck, and then you either spring the cards onto your baseball cap, or fan the cards before the cap and the previously selected card will appear to be attached to the top knob of your baseball cap.

Ralf explains how you have to gimmick the cap, and he will demonstrate several ideas and handlings of how you can perform this routine.

The spectator finds their card in an incredible way, with a stunning kicker revelation.

The jokers are given to a spectator to hold, then a card is selected. The chosen card is shuffled and lost in the deck. The cards are spread face down and the spectator freely inserts the jokers face up around any single card, isolating it from the rest. This mystery card is now turned over to reveal that, incredibly, it is their selected card. The effect could end right here, but in an unexpected finale, the jokers are turned over to reveal a jaw-dropping prediction.
