The Sphinx Index by Chris WasshuberThe Sphinx Index is a 540 page PDF, indexing all 52 volumes of The Sphinx magazine. Three people worked for hundreds of hours to collect and categorize this information. It has more than 14,000 entries. The index covers all tricks, effects and articles, but does not include assembly reports and other short trip reports or news items. An interesting category is Portraits & Photos where all photos are indexed by the name of the person shown in the photo. This makes it easy to find image information about hundreds of magicians. The other index categories are: Articles - Biographical, Articles - Historical, Articles...

The Ultimate Magic Square (King of Hearts) by Chris Wasshuber
"I've been doing magic 40 years, and this may be one of my five favorite tricks. Excellent thinking. Hard to top." - Clyde Hayre, US.

A spectator is asked to throw three fair dice (this is an absolute fair throw, or even just a mental throw - no force here). From the number fairly thrown you construct a perfect magic square. For a kicker the cards are put together and the face of a King of Hearts appears.

There is no palming of cards or exchanging of decks or anything like it. You work with 16 cards and 16 cards only without any sleight-of-hand.

You get 16 specially printed cards...

The Ultimate Magic Square (That's Magic) by Chris Wasshuber
"I've been doing magic 40 years, and this may be one of my five favorite tricks. Excellent thinking. Hard to top." - Clyde Hayre, US.

LOVE IT! I've been looking for a trick to help promote my business and this is perfect as I trade under the name "That's Magic" - Barry Harvey, UK.

A spectator is asked to throw three fair dice (this is an absolute fair throw, or even just a mental throw - no force here). From the number fairly thrown you construct a perfect magic square. For a kicker the cards are put together and a message appears written on the cards: "That's Magic!".

Samuel Cox Hooker and his Rising Cards by Chris WasshuberDr. Samuel Cox Hooker's Rising Cards have been an unexplainable fascination for nearly a century. Hooker first showed his effect in 1914, and in 1993 and 2007 John Gaughan gave abbreviated performances. Nobody who has seen the Hooker Rising Cards performed has ever been able to explain how such effects can be accomplished. This includes the most notable and most knowledgeable magicians from past and present. How can, from a borrowed and shuffled deck, any card called for rise in the fairest possible manner on a well lit stage only a few feet from the spectators?

This work is not just about...

Knight's Tour: With Free Choice of Start and End by Chris Wasshuber
"I will sum up your Knight's Tour routine as follows, IT IS BRILLIANT!" - David Burmeister
In the late 1980s I developed a method for the Knight's Tour which allows a spectator a truly free choice for the starting square and ending square of opposite color (same color start and end is mathematically impossible).

This manuscript describes in detail this method. The method attempts to minimize memorization and teaches you a system to derive a proper complete tour on the spot. The method is so flexible that you can find several different tours for one pair of start and end points. Of course,...

The Endless Chain Prop by Chris WasshuberThis is the ideal prop for the Loopy Loop, Figure Eight, Chain Swindle, or Pricking the Garter con game. (It is also ideal for any chain and ring or chain and hoop routine.) The length, size of balls, and material significantly contribute to the visual deception of this entertaining swindle.

It is an endless nickle plated steel ball chain without any clasp for opening. Total length is 60 inches (1.5 meter) and the balls diameter is 3/16 of an inch (4.5 mm). One of the valuable properties of this ball chain is that it can never get twisted, because each ball freely rotates. The loop is therefore...

52 Standard American Card Faces by Chris WasshuberYou will receive 52 vector graphic files in SVG and EPS (encapsulated post script) format. Each file holds the design of a face of a card from a standard deck of cards. These faces are for example used in Bicycle cards from USPCC, but can be found in many other brands and non-brand decks. All cards from Ace to King in all four colors, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, Spades are represented. There are no jokers and no backs included.

Each card is a vector graphic and can therefore be altered and modified in any way you like without loss of quality. You will need a vector graphic tool like the free...

Fitch Cheney 5-Card Trick: for iPhones by Chris WasshuberIn 1950 mathematician and magician William Fitch Cheney Jr. published a two person card trick. Some consider it the best mathematical card trick ever devised. The basic effect is as follows.
Five cards are randomly picked from a deck (can be a borrowed deck, an incomplete deck ... there is nothing marked or otherwise tricky with the deck) and given to the performer, who shows four of them to his performing partner. The partner sees nothing else except the four cards (no other signalling or silent codes), but promptly reveals the identity of the fifth card.
Obviously the identity of the...

911 Summing by Chris WasshuberI rarely get to work on my own creations these days. 911 Summing is one of those rare occasions. It is an effect and method I have created more than 20 years ago. Both the effect and the method are to the best of my knowledge completely new and have never been published before.

This is a math effect I have had a lot of fun with. It can even be performed as puzzle challenge rather than a magic effect. I have performed this for people twice as smart as myself - engineers, scientists, researchers, professors - you name it. Not once has anybody figured out how it is done, even though, the principle...

All Roads Lead To Rome: exploration of an unusual magic method by Chris WasshuberWith contributions by Werner Miller, Max Maven and Shigeo Futagawa.

The day was March 6th 2011 when Werner Miller sent me his Da Capo 3 and Da Capo 4 ebooks. Whenever I receive something from Werner I make time to read it. He has a knack to incorporate new twists and takes, or entirely new principles which stimulate my own grey cells.

Browsing Da Capo 3 I stumbled on an unusual effect which Werner titled “Pointing the Way”. It was first published in 2001 in Club 71. This effect consisted of two parts. One was a printing effect where blank cards were shown, which later had arrows printed on them. This part of the effect was nothing special, the usual...

Shuber Blades by Chris WasshuberShuber Blades are the new versatile and cool accessory for the modern card magician. They protect your cards like a card clip or card guard, but are not limited to a single deck of cards. Anything from a single card up to two decks can be protected equally well.

Shuber Blades are two sturdy stainless steel plates with size and shape equal to a Poker card. Put one plate at the bottom, the other at the top of your deck and secure everything with the custom rubber band. The plates will protect your cards and keep them flat and clean. You can protect anything from a single card, or small packet...

Rubber Bands for Shuber Blades (5 pieces) by Chris WasshuberWe received so many requests for these rubber bands that we decided to offer them separately from the Shuber Blades. The blades will hold forever, but the rubber bands will eventually deteriorate or break. With this package you can get replacement bands for your Shuber Blades.

You will get 5 replacement rubber bands. Each rubber band is custom made from a transparent synthetic rubber. They are 0.75" (~2cm) wide. Their flat length is 3.7" (~9 cm). They fit the Shuber Blades perfectly but have also many other uses.

I sometimes use these rubber bands without blades. It doesn't give you the same protection...

The Hunt For Erdnase: and the Path to Edward Gallaway by Chris WasshuberThe hunt to find the true identity of S. W. Erdnase, the author of The Expert at the Card Table, published in 1902 in Chicago, has been raging for more than a century. The book is as revered by gamblers and magicians as the Bible is by Christians.

One of the first and most active Erdnase hunters was well-known science writer, puzzle expert, and magician Martin Gardner, who erroneously thought he identified cardshark and murderer Milton Franklin Andrews as being Erdnase. After Andrews many other candidates were proposed, but none had a case strong enough to withstand scrutiny. None wrote like Erdnase, nor had sufficient opportunity, nor even a...

Two Person Code For One Person by Chris WasshuberThis is a system to easily remember one or two cards, say two key cards, and not forget them during the performance of your routine. It is not an associative memory system.

Some card routines, particularly the recently published ones in Sunken Treasury by Nick Conticello require one to remember two key cards. In the heat of performing such an effect these can be forgotten, rendering the trick a failure. This system allows you to easily keep track of one or two or more cards that you want to remember.

There is very little to learn for this system. Reading this manuscript should be enough to put this system to work....

The Stack and System Maigret by Danny Crauwels & Chris WasshuberThe problem with all existing memorized stack systems is that they use memorization systems not specifically designed for a memorized stack. Most memory systems are designed for the retention of LOTS of information for a relatively SHORT amount of time. When Dominic O'Brien memorizes 54 decks of cards (more than 2800 cards) with a particular journey system then he retains that information for a couple of hours max. After that he has forgotten the sequence. He has to, because around the corner waits another memory challenge where he has to memorize many other things. However, the magician ideally wants to remember...

Two Card Stand by Chris WasshuberThis is a card stand for two cards (or one jumbo card) primarily for close-up use. The stand is semi-transparent and hides the number index sufficiently so that one cannot read it. One can see that something is there but not exactly what. The cards do not sit completely upright but tilted back by 10 degrees to improve visibility in a close-up setting.

The stand is 17 cm long, 17 mm high and it has a semi-circular cross section. The depth of the slit is 13 mm - meaning the bottom most 13 mm of a card will be hidden by the stand. The stand is short enough to be carried in an inside jacket pocket. ...
