Imagine: The performer shuffles a deck of cards. He hands them to a spectator, who shuffles them once more. The magician turns away, and the spectator fans half the deck before him and selects any card from the fanned cards. He remembers the card and puts it back into the deck face-up - anywhere. He now makes a total mess of the cards: half of them face-up, the other half face-down. He shuffles the cards again, and again, and again - as often as he likes. Furthermore, he flips the deck so frequently that he has no idea which way his card is facing.

These are two very interesting self-working effects, both based on topological principles. You do not need to learn any math or remember a whole lot to perform these two stunning effects. (These two effects have been taken from Shane's books Automata and Pentalogy.)

A spectator freely names a card (e.g. 5D) which is cut into the centre of a blue deck. The performer cuts a card of his choice (e.g. AS) into the centre of a red deck. The spectator and performer are now going to attempt to make their chosen cards reverse themselves while the packs are still inside their boxes.

Having mimed the removal and turning over of cards, the performer fans the spectator's blue deck only to discover that there is one card face up, but it's the AS! The magician then fans his red backed deck - and to everyone's surprise, the only face-up card in that pack is the one...

A genuinely freely selected card is signed and then the rest of the deck is returned to the card box which is placed on the palm up left hand. The chosen card is now slid under the sealed box and the right hand is slapped firmly on top of the case. With his empty right hand, the performer lifts the card box to reveal that the signed selection has vanished, the box itself being shown freely from all sides.

The box is now opened and the deck slid out and spread across the table to reveal that there is one card reversed in the pack's centre - it's the signed chosen card!

The performer shows three cards: two jokers, and the queen of hearts. The queen of hearts is the money card. All the spectators have to do is follow the queen. No matter how hard they try, it just isn't possible. The queen is anywhere but where they think she is. Finally, in an effort to make it easier to follow, one of the jokers is set aside. The queen is mixed with the one remaining joker. Instantly, the queen has vanished leaving only two jokers in your hands. Effect: You show a deck of playing cards - they're blank on the back and on the face you have written all the letters of the alphabet, one letter on each card. The spectator shuffles the deck and selects any four cards. He is then asked to form a word from the four cards chosen. If it so happens that he can make more than one word - he is allowed a COMPLETELY FREE CHOICE of which word he would like to settle on. A prediction that has been in full view throughout is then shown to accuratley match the freely chosen word!

This is Alan Rorrison's semi-sarcastic reply to the dreaded request: "Can you pull a rabbit out of a hat?" This question has plagued close-up magicians for decades. Suffer no more. This effect is the appropriate answer and will silence your pesky spectators.
