Magic from Joel and Jim

Joel Howlett
Magic from Joel and Jim by Joel Howlett

International award-winning Australian magician Joel Howlett was a very close friend to the late Jim McKeague. Jim was not only a magician but also a magic historian and author of The Best 200 Tricks With A Svengali Deck.

Joel has taken the time to describe three of the routines ('Jack And His Dog', 'Ten Card Poker' and 'The Three Card Trick') that he and Jim worked on together. Joel has also attempted to include some of the advice and tips Jim lovingly shared with him. The result was this PDF book.

PLEASE NOTE - The ebook is aimed at the intermediate magician as some of the more basic card moves are not described in detail.

Magic: Stage Illusions and Scientific Diversions including Trick Photography

Albert A. Hopkins
Magic: Stage Illusions and Scientific Diversions including Trick Photography by Albert A. Hopkins

A massive collection of information with a huge amount of beautiful illustrations mostly compiled from the pages of Scientific American magazine. The introduction is by Henry Ridgely Evans.

During the 1890s, Scientific American magazine published detailed explanations of magic illusions. The informant for the magazine was no other than William E. Robinson, aka Chung Ling Soo, who at that time was the stage manager for Harry Kellar. Kellar was upset once he found out that he had a mole in his company who would feed the descriptions of some of his most popular illusions to the magazine, including the rope tie that formed the basis of his Spirit...

Magic in Miniature

Bobby Bernard
Magic in Miniature by Bobby Bernard

A lecture in the art of close-up magic.

Excerpt from the introduction by Val Andrews:

One of the most interesting "characters" in the London Magic Scene, as well as being one of the most good-natured men I've ever met.... that's Bobby. A great magical enthusiast, a great talker, the centre of every gathering he attends (though not of his own choosing).... that's Bobby.

Always he has retained this keeness for what he calls "Magic in Miniature" and this has been the one anchor of an otherwise erratic young man.

His great enthusiasm, for practically everything, and his willingness to perform his...

Using storytelling to not only effectively enhance effects, but also your show.

As a performer, I generally prefer the methods of the tricks I choose to be simple, the plots clear, and the magic...well, magical. I use stories to draw the audience in. To find interest in not only the effect I am presenting but also in me.

CONTENTS:

The Why and Way - How I use Stories, that help ensure my audiences remember Me and not just the effects.

Kiss Me Fate - a Tarot effect

Magic Annual 1937 (Hugard's Annual of Magic)

Jean Hugard
Magic Annual 1937 (Hugard's Annual of Magic) by Jean Hugard

In general magic books cover a certain subject area. Here a slice through time is offered. The 'Magic Annual' describes the best and most popular effects from one year. (There is a second volume in this series Magic Annual 1938-1939.)

Max Holden writes in the introduction: "Some of the items are new, some are old tricks given a novel twist, while other effects, although known in a general way, are now published in detail for the first time - among these latter, the Hugard Fire Eating Act, Hugard's Bullet Catching Feat and my own presentation of Smoke Pictures. Jean Hugard has given his best, as usual, and I am...

Topic: Magic Is Fun

David Robbins started this magazine in 1946 and distributed it to the general public at newsstands. Magic organizations were upset about this and screamed 'exposure' which forced Mr. Robbins to change his publication strategy. He pulled the magazine from general newsstands and advertised it only to magicians. This in turn collapsed his subscription numbers and the magazine folded after the seventh issue.

Magic in Cabaret Land

Ken de Courcy
Magic in Cabaret Land by Ken de Courcy

From the introduction:

The word itself, "Cabaret", carries overtones that conjure exotic pictures of nude dancers, the "Moulin Rouge" and German Beer Cellars; a sort of high-class iniquitous entertainment enjoyed by the lucky few. But that is all changed. It's been brought down to the level of the man-in-the-street. Now he can have a ringside seat for dining, dancing, drinking, a show ... and gambling.

Yet he won't take advantage of all this 'loose-living' unless there is also a "SHOW", as the proprietors of these establishments well know. There is a plethora of singers and 'groups', and...

Best Dam Tricks: 25 Rubber Penetration Tricks

Best Dam Tricks: 25 Rubber Penetration Tricks by Magic Ian

Lubor Fiedler's famous dental dam illusion principle is applied to a variety of tricks and routines, not just the penetration of a coin through a rubber sheet. The only sad part here is that the name Lubor Fiedler cannot be found anywhere in this publication. No credit was given.

Excerpt from the introduction by Walter Gibson:

When the rubber penetration came into popularity several years ago, it represented something really new in magic. Here was a trick that was actually accomplished before it began, leaving onlookers baffled by a visible penetration of a coin through a sheet of solid rubber, with no clue whatever...

Magic by Theory

Magic by Theory by Daniel Skahen

As the title suggests, this is a pure work about theory, but not old and dusty thoughts, instead a fresh and new look by Daniel Tyler. Certainly you will find topics which are as old as magic, such as 'the merit of gimmicks' and 'misdirection', but you will also find a chapter dealing with 'where to shop', which is up-to-date and includes places on the internet. This chapter alone can save you a multiple of the price of this ebook. Or what about 'getting the girl' or 'how to admire Blaine, but be yourself' - all topics that Daniel discusses. You might be shocked to hear that Daniel is just eighteen...
