An impromptu 21-card trick on steroids.

From a deck shuffled by one spectator (S1), another spectator (S2) deals any 21 playing cards, singly and face down, in the palm of the magician. The remaining cards are discarded. Each spectator removes any card from the face-down pack. The magician shows the first card to S1 and cuts it into the pack. Same with S2.

Next, the magician deals the cards haphazardly in a few packets (each containing a different number of cards) on the table. They are all shuffled by S1 and S2. Then, in order to demonstrate how to gather the packets in a single pile,...

The business card of the fortune teller Madame Magdelaine De La Grange has been torn in two. The spectator retains one piece. The other piece vanishes and appears stuck to the back of the spectator's selected card. The piece retained by the spectator matches the piece on the card perfectly.

This effect was invented by Herbert Milton and made popular by Karl Germain. The improved method needs no double-faced cards and can be done impromptu providing the right type of glass is available. This visual effect can be performed at any time in your act and it may be done silently, with talk, or to music.

EFFECT: A shuffled deck of cards is placed in a stem goblet. Each time a handkerchief is flicked in front of the glass an ace appears.

The magician can't find the spectator's card but his prediction can.

In short:

The spectator cuts to a card, removes it from the deck and remembers it. Then, the magician shuffles the deck and divides it into two halves. The spectator shuffles both parts, loses his selection between them, and shuffles even more. At the end, the magician runs through the deck and removes a card, but it is not the spectator's. Fortunately, the magician has an "emergency out", a message on a piece of paper inside a red envelope, in full view from the start. The spectator reads it out loud:

A spectator is asked to freely cut a shuffled deck of playing cards and hide the cut-off portion in his pocket, while the magician is standing far from the table with his head turned away.

This book is indeed worthy the name Encyclopedia. Originally compiled by Doctor Wilhelm von Deusen in collaboration with Mr. Glenn G. Gravatt (published in two volumes Encyclopedia of Self-Working Card Tricks and The Second Encyclopedia of Card Tricks), and later rewritten by Jean Hugard. It has a very interesting introduction by Ted Annemann where he addresses the issue of inventing new tricks and claiming ownership. This book will provide you with more card tricks than you ever wanted.
