Patrik Kuffs
Toronto Kufference 2011 by Patrik Kuffs

Very First - Impression
This routine is meant to be as an opener. After some research, it appears that the clever Michael Weber has flirted with a very similar idea. He used the idea as a closer, while I offer here the idea as an opener. Note that the underlying principle behind this method has, inevitably, been alluded to in one form or another by Marlo and/or Vernon, or is buried within Tarbell.

Malini for Dummies
Ever since the very first time I saw David Copperfield perform a "newspaper card stab" in a movie, I've considered the card stab to be one of the more seductive presentation in magic as far as card tricks...

Gerard Zitta
Camouflage by Gerard Zitta

"Hidden": A secret hidden in most decks of cards. You already have it. It can be used for magic or mentalism effects as it will add something "bizarre" or intriguing to your card tricks. Or as a double kicker. YOu will use it in your existing routines or invent new ones. Guaranteed. A typical example is "The Fine Print" by Jay Sankey. The difference is that you can do it impromptu, without buying a gimmick, and with some touch of mentalism.

"You remove a playing card from a deck of cards and leave it face down on the table as a prediction. A spectator then selects a card from the deck, but...

Devin Knight
Smiling George Card Revelation by Devin Knight

The magician shows an ungimmicked deck of cards and lets the spectator shuffle them, if he so desires. A card is then freely selected using no force and pushed back into the middle of the deck. The magician then cuts the deck and deals the top five cards in a face down horizontal row in front of the spectator.

The magician then shows a dollar bill and says "A lot of people don't know this, but George Washington is also a magician and I think he can find your card!" The magician says this tongue-in-cheek.

With the front of the bill facing the spectator and being held over the first face...

Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin
The Sharper Detected and Exposed by Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin

The first part consists of stories about cardsharks and other crooks from Robert-Houdin's recollections. This is very readable and an entertaining part of the work. The second part explains some of the technical details of the methods used by cardsharks. However, the methods are for the most part only described in very rudimentary form. As Robert-Houdin writes himself, this is not meant as a way to teach you how to do it, but merely to give the reader insight in how the different ruses are accomplished. Nevertheless, it provides interesting insight into the ways and means of cardsharks.

Ian Baxter
Scarne Thinks Again by Ian Baxter

Here is a 21st Century version of John Scarne's Think-A-Card, published by U.F. Grant back in 1938. Whereas Scarne's version relied on the convenience of writing predictions on cigarette papers, Baxter completely dispenses with this quaint idea with a new, slick presentation.

Daley was really fired up about this highly effective mental test from the ingenious Scarne: "You are about to become the possessor of a rare and beautiful gem in mental magic" he enthused. "Simple in its modus operandi and yet so tremendously effective...an almost perfect demonstration of mind reading."

Scarne, a universally recognized...

Sly Card by bboymagic

Please note that the instructions are purely visual, no spoken words.

This is a very subtle method to find a freely chosen (not forced) card. It needs some prior preparation, but the deck (cards) are not altered in any way. After the effect there is nothing left to detect and the cards can be handed out or given away.

The method to locate the chosen card is not sleight-of-hand based. But to present it properly you will need some basic card handling skills such as shuffling, cutting, and spreading cards. Depending on how you choose to produce the chosen card you may need to be able to cull...

Zo-Change by bboymagic

Please note that this video is in Vietnamese, but the instructions to make the gimmick, and how to use it is perfectly understandable from the visual information alone.

Change a bill into a card. Easy gimmick. Easy to perform.

Obviously you need to use paper money that is compatible with the width of the cards you are using. Often bills can be trimmed slightly if they are too wide.

Birthday Card Surprise by Wolfgang Riebe

Another killer close-up packet card trick from the creative mind of Wolfgang Riebe. 3 blank cards are shown and a spectator is asked to write their name and a picture on one of the cards. Suddenly the freely drawn name/picture duplicates onto all 3 cards. Now the surprise ... suddenly all cards have HAPPY BIRTHDAY written on them!

A completely unexpected surprise and incredibly personal magical birthday greeting. Of course you can have any message written on all 3 cards at the end too - it’s all up to you.

Use any normal blank cards. Ideal for table hopping. Incredibly visual with an...

Ken de Courcy
Ultimate Faulty Followers by Ken de Courcy

Here is a wonderful routine that you can perform every time and everywhere. From an idea by George Sands, Ken developed a beautiful three phases routine that can be performed under all circumstances with eight unprepared giant cards. The routine develops the theme “You can’t do what I do”.

Effect: Having enticed a spectator up to help, the magician hands him eight jumbo cards and says, "Please give me any four....and keep four yourself." This done, both performer and spectator carry out some simple movements but, when the cards are counted over, all the magician's cards are face down...

Print by Ninh

Please not that this video is in Vietnamese with English subtitles.

The audience chooses a card. They keep it secret. The magician takes out a pack of gum packaged in a blister pack. He makes a gesture and magically a card suit appears on the inside of one gum blister. He continues to shake his hands again, and the value of the card appears in a second blister. The magician then removes the gum from its package and the audience can clearly see their picture card located on the gum.

The gimmick is very clever and requires a bit of 'arts and crafts'.

Chris Wasshuber
Shuber Vise by Chris Wasshuber

The Shuber Vise is a card guard that has a card press integrated. I always wanted to combine these two functions into one small enough accessory to fit into my pocket. The Shuber Vise does exactly that. It is not wider than a deck of cards and is only somewhat longer and thicker, yet it perfectly protects your cards and keeps them under pressure so that they do not warp or bend, which every deck of cards does after some use without being pressed flat. With decks that cost $20 and more these days, it pays to take good care of your cards.

If your deck is already warped and bent, no problem....

Wolfgang Riebe
Blank Card Surprise by Wolfgang Riebe

Wacky, incredibly visual and totally impossible. Only a few words can describe this reputation maker. Ever wondered what to do with those double blank cards you've collected over the years? Here's the ultimate trick for you.

A spectator can chose any 4 double blank cards from a deck, or you can hand out 4 cards for inspection. Any one card is signed and placed aside. The remaining 3 cards all change to the spectator's signed card and can be clearly shown one at a time. In the end, they all become blank again and the spectator keeps his original signed card as a souvenir.

Elective One-Eyed Jacks by Ian Baxter

That popular card plot One-Eyed Jack Sandwich is given a new lease of life here, with the assisting spectator being asked where the magic is to take place – within the deck or out of it. Themed after a 1930’s classic The Charmed Watch, this smooth handling is sure to delight the most fastidious card man.

The One-Eyed Jack Sandwich theme was popularized by Harry Lorayne. However, it was none other than the Australian Charles Wicks who started the ball rolling, with his contribution The Charmed Watch appearing in The Magic Wand journal over eighty years ago. Ian's streamlined version keeps within the guidelines of...

Vernon's 1-2-3 Revisited by Ian Baxter

A perennial favorite in card magic: A chosen card is lost in the deck and the performer, showing the Ace, Two and Three of one suit, offers to change whichever is picked into the selection. That is exactly what happens, with Baxter’s smooth method making good use of The Ascanio Spread, achieving just that. Full instructions given, straightforward and easy to learn.

This revision of the Vernon classic not only underlines the all-important simplicity angle by using a shortcut display move, but dispenses with Vernon's need for Palming. Bruce Elliott briefly touched on this in the concluding lines...

Of Paradise by Tom Phoenix

Here is a collection of Open Prediction methods, for the working mentalist or magician. Each method is clean, using no gimmicks.

These methods employ unorthodox techniques, and will take some practice. Since only sleight-of-hand is required, you no longer need to carry extra gimmicks or special decks to perform this type of effect. A spectator makes a free selection, the selection is replaced, and is then shown to match your prediction.

Four methods are included. Each one is 100% clean. You can use a borrowed, shuffled deck. There are no gimmicks, no R/S, no SF, and no sticky stuff. These...
