Very First - Impression
This routine is meant to be as an opener. After some research, it appears that the clever Michael Weber has flirted with a very similar idea. He used the idea as a closer, while I offer here the idea as an opener. Note that the underlying principle behind this method has, inevitably, been alluded to in one form or another by Marlo and/or Vernon, or is buried within Tarbell.

Ever since the very first time I saw David Copperfield perform a "newspaper card stab" in a movie, I've considered the card stab to be one of the more seductive presentation in magic as far as card tricks...

"Hidden": A secret hidden in most decks of cards. You already have it. It can be used for magic or mentalism effects as it will add something "bizarre" or intriguing to your card tricks. Or as a double kicker. YOu will use it in your existing routines or invent new ones. Guaranteed. A typical example is "The Fine Print" by Jay Sankey. The difference is that you can do it impromptu, without buying a gimmick, and with some touch of mentalism.

THE MOVES // by AJ: Topsy is a single card force utilizing no breaks whatsoever and Turvy is a single / multiple card control to the bottom. They both are easy and fun to learn. You'll be doing these in no time.

THE ROUTINES // by Abhinav:

SATELLITE SIGNAL: 3 spectators stop at three random cards (no forces) and send their thoughts to the performer (all at once) the performer receives the thoughts and finds the cards and figures out which card belongs to which of the 3 spectators.

Mr. MIRACLE: A selection gets...

The magician shows an ungimmicked deck of cards and lets the spectator shuffle them, if he so desires. A card is then freely selected using no force and pushed back into the middle of the deck. The magician then cuts the deck and deals the top five cards in a face down horizontal row in front of the spectator.

The magician then shows a dollar bill and says "A lot of people don't know this, but George Washington is also a magician and I think he can find your card!" The magician says this tongue-in-cheek.

The first part consists of stories about cardsharks and other crooks from Robert-Houdin's recollections. This is very readable and an entertaining part of the work. The second part explains some of the technical details of the methods used by cardsharks. However, the methods are for the most part only described in very rudimentary form. As Robert-Houdin writes himself, this is not meant as a way to teach you how to do it, but merely to give the reader insight in how the different ruses are accomplished. Here is a 21st Century version of John Scarne's Think-A-Card, published by U.F. Grant back in 1938. Whereas Scarne's version relied on the convenience of writing predictions on cigarette papers, Baxter completely dispenses with this quaint idea with a new, slick presentation.

This is a very subtle method to find a freely chosen (not forced) card. It needs some prior preparation, but the deck (cards) are not altered in any way. After the effect there is nothing left to detect and the cards can be handed out or given away.

The method to locate the chosen card is not sleight-of-hand based. But to present it properly you will need some basic card handling skills such as shuffling, cutting, and spreading cards. Depending on how you choose to produce the chosen card you may need to be able to cull...

Change a bill into a card. Easy gimmick. Easy to perform.

Obviously you need to use paper money that is compatible with the width of the cards you are using. Often bills can be trimmed slightly if they are too wide.

Here is a wonderful routine that you can perform every time and everywhere. From an idea by George Sands, Ken developed a beautiful three phases routine that can be performed under all circumstances with eight unprepared giant cards. The routine develops the theme “You can’t do what I do”.

Effect: Having enticed a spectator up to help, the magician hands him eight jumbo cards and says, "Please give me any four....and keep four yourself." This done, both performer and spectator carry out some simple movements but, when the cards are counted over, all the magician's cards are face down...

Show any design you want on the card by simply lightly burning it with a lighter. When you pick a card and burn it, it will usually leave black streaks on the cards, but with Tattoos on Cards, black streaks will transform into any design of your choice: an image of a chosen card, a heart or your signature, a short message, ...

The audience chooses a card. They keep it secret. The magician takes out a pack of gum packaged in a blister pack. He makes a gesture and magically a card suit appears on the inside of one gum blister. He continues to shake his hands again, and the value of the card appears in a second blister. The magician then removes the gum from its package and the audience can clearly see their picture card located on the gum.

The gimmick is very clever and requires a bit of 'arts and crafts'.

The Shuber Vise is a card guard that has a card press integrated. I always wanted to combine these two functions into one small enough accessory to fit into my pocket. The Shuber Vise does exactly that. It is not wider than a deck of cards and is only somewhat longer and thicker, yet it perfectly protects your cards and keeps them under pressure so that they do not warp or bend, which every deck of cards does after some use without being pressed flat. A spectator can chose any 4 double blank cards from a deck, or you can hand out 4 cards for inspection. Any one card is signed and placed aside. The remaining 3 cards all change to the spectator's signed card and can be clearly shown one at a time. In the end, they all become blank again and the spectator keeps his original signed card as a souvenir.
