In this little exposition Nick Conticello describes how he finds and places key cards for the various effects he has created.

In the first version of this terrific packet trick, the four queens are removed from the deck, and are held face down. One at a time and in turn, each queen turns face up as in the "Twisting the Aces" routine.

After all of the queens have had their turn face up, and are all face down once again, the magician asks the spectator to name any one of the queens. He explains that whichever queen is named, it will magically turn face up. Let's assume that the named queen is the Queen of Spades. The performer snaps his fingers and says, "Would you be amazed if the queen you named is now face up?" ...

An intriguing selection of card effects, A Spell Of Cards is not wholly concerned with spelling tricks. There are more than several offering a sideways glance at the concept. They take the spelling genre a little bit off the usual well-beaten track.

Among the non-spellers, there are a few move-related fragments. Nothing to run and hide from, though faro shuffles and bottom deals get a look in along the way; as well as established favourites like the Braue Addition, Double Undercut and the odd false shuffle.

This is a system to easily remember one or two cards, say two key cards, and not forget them during the performance of your routine. It is not an associative memory system.

Some card routines, particularly the recently published ones in Sunken Treasury by Nick Conticello require one to remember two key cards. In the heat of performing such an effect these can be forgotten, rendering the trick a failure. This system allows you to easily keep track of one or two or more cards that you want to remember.

There is very little to learn for this system. Reading this manuscript should be enough to put this system to work....

A card is selected. The spectator makes a random doodle on the card. The doodle is filled in to create a picture, say of a fish. The card then vanishes and reappears... wherever you want it to!...

This is a triple prediction effect. It requires intermediate sleight-of-hand including second dealing. The routine includes additional handlings (impromptu and set-up versions) and two bonus effects/ideas. Some presentational tips are included, too.

Keep these points in mind:

• Impromptu (the deck is set up only once and you're ready to perform it as many times as you want!)

This is the gambling demonstration that Cristóbal uses in his show "Cartas Bajo Control" ("Cards Under Control"). About ten minutes long, it's an entire act with four phases, showing almost impossible skills, like card location while shuffling, estimation, card control, and the legendary center deal. You can deal the four aces without spectators being able to see how it is done, even when they know what you are going to do.

Two spectators are invited on stage. Spectator A gives the deck a shuffle, and then deals exactly twenty cards into the magician's hand. The performer shuffles the twenty cards, and then gives some of the cards to Spectator A and the rest to Spectator B, who proceed to shuffle them further. Both packets of cards are then handed back to the performer who shuffles the twenty cards together.
