The day was March 6th 2011 when Werner Miller sent me his Da Capo 3 and Da Capo 4 ebooks. Whenever I receive something from Werner I make time to read it. He has a knack to incorporate new twists and takes, or entirely new principles which stimulate my own grey cells.

Browsing Da Capo 3 I stumbled on an unusual effect which Werner titled "Pointing the Way". It was first published in 2001 in Club 71. This effect consisted of two parts. Effect: Show to spectator 4 blank cards. Suddenly the blank cards change into four normal face cards. Additional supplies may need to be purchased to perform this effect.

Benefits:

• Very Organic, in terms of props and method
• Easy to do, with expansion possibilities (peeking multiple thoughts) when you become more dexterous with the gimmick.
• The easy to make gimmick will take one minute to construct using items you have at home. No mirrors, flaps or cutting up cards. This is beautiful in it's simplicity.
• The gimmick can be invisibly added or taken away from a stack of business/blank cards to allow you to use any other peeking methods throughout your set. It's less than 1mm thick!

So, what is Silent Running?

Briefly, it's a "Think Of A Card" concept that requires no props at all. You don't even need a deck of cards. A spectator is asked to merely THINK of a number from 1-10 and to NOT TELL YOU. Once she has done this, she is asked to think of a suit and again to NOT TELL YOU. Then, ENTIRELY IN HER MIND she adds the suit to the number to create a visual image of a playing card. Again, SHE SAYS NOTHING!...

Four amazing distinct changes: First, four cards of one value (say the four Fours) are shown. They have blue backs. One by one each of these blue-backed cards turns face down. Second, all the cards change to red backs. Third, the faces all change to red suits. Fourth, the backs are now marked, each has a large X printed on it! Instead of the X's any message can be revealed.
