I consider this among the very best card books ever written - and I have read an awful lot of card books. You might ask why a rather thin work from the 1980s would qualify for that high praise? There are three very good reasons for it.

One, Walt Lees has selected four absolute gems of card magic. He could have added fifteen other ok routines to make it look a lot more, but he has refused to pad his work with mediocre material. It includes a history of dice and playing cards including a fairly detailed description of how playing cards were made. It has a chapter on fortune telling with cards. Look into a deck without looking.

While your back is turned, spectator deals cards off a deck that they shuffled while you wait for them to reach a card that you 'sense' might be near their card. Then they are to deal a few cards from that spot onto the table side by side and they are to hover their hand over each one - your back still turned - while you tell them to slam their hand on a certain one. It is their card.

THE MOVES // by AJ: Topsy is a single card force utilizing no breaks whatsoever and Turvy is a single / multiple card control to the bottom. They both are easy and fun to learn. You'll be doing these in no time.

SATELLITE SIGNAL: 3 spectators stop at three random cards (no forces) and send their thoughts to the performer (all at once) the performer receives the thoughts and finds the cards and figures out which card belongs to which of the 3 spectators.

The magician shows an ungimmicked deck of cards and lets the spectator shuffle them, if he so desires. A card is then freely selected using no force and pushed back into the middle of the deck. The magician then cuts the deck and deals the top five cards in a face down horizontal row in front of the spectator.

The magician then shows a dollar bill and says "A lot of people don't know this, but George Washington is also a magician and I think he can find your card!" The magician says this tongue-in-cheek.

The first part consists of stories about cardsharks and other crooks from Robert-Houdin's recollections. This is very readable and an entertaining part of the work. The second part explains some of the technical details of the methods used by cardsharks. However, the methods are for the most part only described in very rudimentary form. As Robert-Houdin writes himself, this is not meant as a way to teach you how to do it, but merely to give the reader insight in how the different ruses are accomplished. Nevertheless, it provides interesting insight into the ways and means of cardsharks.
