Billet reading is a standard and popular mentalist effect. Spectators write or draw something on a small slip of paper. The paper is folded, sometimes put inside an envelope, and the mentalist reveals these written thoughts in some form. The billet reading techniques were first developed by fraudulent mediums. Charles Foster and Bert Reese popularized them among magicians during the 1860s and 1870s. As with pretty much any basic method, magicians and mentalists have developed a staggering amount of variations, refinements, and improvements over the years.

The Knight BilletRonald Levy & Devin Knight![]() Richard Osterlind is correct when he says that many mentalists stay away from Annemann's billet work because it seems hard to do. The basic idea is to switch a billet for a blank one and secretly open it in your pocket or behind a clipboard or book.
