Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin
The Sharper Detected and Exposed by Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin

The first part consists of stories about cardsharks and other crooks from Robert-Houdin's recollections. This is very readable and an entertaining part of the work. The second part explains some of the technical details of the methods used by cardsharks. However, the methods are for the most part only described in very rudimentary form. As Robert-Houdin writes himself, this is not meant as a way to teach you how to do it, but merely to give the reader insight in how the different ruses are accomplished. Nevertheless, it provides interesting insight into the ways and means of cardsharks.

Mark Elsdon
A Head Full of Books by Mark Elsdon

A Head Full of Books has actually replaced the Hoy book test as my go-to casual mind-reading effect.

Whilst visiting someone's home (or in a bar or coffee shop that has books on the shelves) you ask someone to select any book from their library or off the shelf. He opens the book to any page and reads the first few lines to himself while you look away.

Without touching the book you immediately reveal what he just read! It's that clean.

  • Zero memory work.
  • Use almost any book, in any language.
  • Nothing is written down by the participant or the performer.
  • No sleights, finger breaks or other...

Brian T. Lees
Marketing Outside the Box by Brian T. Lees

Marketing does not have to be expensive. Newspaper, radio, and television are good sources, but they can cost a lot of money. There are other activities magicians can do to advertise their services. Many are free, and others have minimum expense. Some magicians only use these sources. This type of marketing works well for them.

To tap into these sources the magician must start to think outside the box. One must reach beyond those expensive venues and get their name out to potential customers through different media and activity. The magician must get creative, carving out exposure to their...

Hamilton Floyd
Manual of Show Stunts by Hamilton Floyd

Stunts of the stage and big top from starting to starring.

An ideal lesson and source book for obtaining information on acquiring show skills. Learn them and perform at fairs, traveling circuses, rodeos, "in one" before the curtain at magic shows, on cruise ships, or on TV. Let's face it. Audiences love show stunts, such as juggling, balance feats, acrobatic demonstrations, and the like. They appreciate the level of skill and dedication that these artists possess.

Because these acts are somewhat of a novelty, they fit in well with other entertainments, making an extravaganza that is a...

Dantes System of Livespan Reading by Robert A. Nelson

Without any written or preliminary foolishness, The Dantes System allows you to deliver a terrific psychological reading to most any spectator. A reading so cleverly conceived and thought-out that it smacks of genuine mindreading.

This sight-reading is apparently the answer to the sitter's innermost thoughts, touching upon the trials and tribulations of the individual, delving into his or her past, discussing the present and probing deeply into the future.

Dantes devoted his life to "sight reading" and is regarded as a most successful reader. If you want to devastate a total stranger by...

Emory Burton & Devin Knight
Quadruple Prediction by Emory Burton & Devin Knight

An amazing mental effect where the magician correctly predicts cards and colors despite odds of over 16,000 to 1 against it. A real stunner you can close a show with. A prediction so impossible that the odds are over 16,000 to 1 against it being correctly predicted.

EFFECT: You give a small sealed envelope to a spectator, saying he can open it at the appropriate time. You then take a deck of cards and shuffle them face up so the spectator can see the cards are really being mixed. You then have a spectator cut the cards twice. Now you show a rectangular piece of cardboard, which stands facing...

Abhinav Bothra
Coalesce by Abhinav Bothra

Coalesce is a scripted 30 minute act of prediction, pseudo-hypnosis, mind reading (both by performer as well as the participant).

It only needs:

  • A deck of cards, a marker and 2 extra jokers
  • An envelope with 3 minutes of preparation (no arts and crafts)
  • A close-up pad
  • A table and 3 chairs
Back in 2016 I published 3 short e-books – A Thought Covertly Conveyed (ATCC), A Thought Stumbled Upon (ATSU) and A Thought Left Unsaid (ATLU). The similar names were intentional because they all were part of an act (note : part of an act) – Coalesce is that act.

ATCC :: A hybrid of a card trick and the plot spectator as mind reader dressed in the clothes of...

Franz (Ronnay) Rosensteiner
9-2-1 Prediction by Franz (Ronnay) Rosensteiner

A very easy to do prediction effect with a surprising ending.

The performer introduces ten cards and deals them into a face-down packet to prove it. He hands the packet to a spectator and asks him to think of any number between one and ten. The cards are then cut by the spectator and shuffled. Then they are laid out in a face-down line. The performer asks the spectator to, for the first time, announce the number he thought of, then counts along the line to that number and pushes out the card lying at that position. (Note that this is a real count that can be done from the spectator - absolutely...

Edward Bagshawe
Proudlock's Sympathetic Silks by Edward Bagshawe

Now you, too, can present this award-winning silk routine in your show.

Here is a beautiful routine using two sets of three silk scarves that magically knot and unknot themselves "in sympathy" with each other ... even from across the stage. Best of all, you can do this with your own silks, as they contain no hidden pockets, sewn-together pairs, or similar fekes.

Edward Proudlock's Sympathetic Silks are a joy to behold, no less to the magician than to the uninitiated beholder. That it was a feature of Proudlock's act for 15 years is a testament as to its beauty and strength. Anyone who...

Blindfold Message Reading by Robert A. Nelson & B. W. McCarron

Arguably the most convincing - and simple - means of performing a sealed billet reading act.

There has always been a consistent demand for a good billet reading routine that can be presented under practically any circumstance, yet has sufficient effectiveness to accomplish its purpose. This method, we feel, meets these requirements most effectively. The means of presentation are varied and elastic. For instance, unprepared envelopes and slips of paper are passed to spectators to write their questions and name thereon. These are folded by any spectator and sealed within the envelopes. The...
