A book test is one of the classic mentalism effects. A spectator chooses a book or magazine, selects a page and a word or sentence and the performer reads the spectator's mind. The first known magician who performed this effect in this form was the Austrian Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser around 1850. Many methods and variations have been created since.
