Magazines & Journals in Magic & Conjuring

Some of the biggest treasures can be found in old magazines and journals. Most tricks are first published in a magazine and then later appear in books. If you want to read about the roots of effects or get a feeling of how it was to be a magician in former times, or if you just can't get enough to read, magazines are the best resource. Many famous magicians of the likes of Dai Vernon, Nate Leipzig or Ted Annemann left their early traces in journals. Few pleasures compare to reading old conjuring journals. The ones I can offer you here are some of the best magic magazines of all time. And comics - what can I say - they have to be seen to be appreciated.

If old magazines are not for you and you rather want to read a current up-to-date magic magazine then check out Magicseen. It has a great mix of interviews, effects, reviews, and news.

George Mackenzie Munro & George Johnson & George Armstrong
The Magic Wand (1910 - 1957) by George Mackenzie Munro & George Johnson & George Armstrong

Martin Breese purchased the copyright to the Magic Wand many years ago. He intended to issue material from the magazine in book form and was little to know, at the time, of the advent of digital publishing and ebooks.

The Magic Wand was first published in September 1910 and continued for 256 issues until December of 1957. It began as a monthly magazine and after a decade it was published quarterly. It was edited by George Munro who was succeeded by George Armstrong. It is rare and very hard to find a complete run. The most valuable issues are those containing the serial publication of The Annals of Conjuring. ...

Geoff Maltby
Club 71: 1970 - 2007 (all issues) by Geoff Maltby

Club 71 magazine ran from 1970 to 2007, with a break from 1978 to 1984, and was produced by Geoff Maltby the owner of Repro Magic (UK). [The name 'Repro' comes from the fact that Maltby started out selling REPROductions of magic posters, at a time when posters were hard to come by and very expensive.] For most of the time Walt Lees was the editor. In its later years it changed its name to The Magician. The total run consists of 193 issues, almost 14,000 pages, plus a parody of Abracadabra magazine.

Due to its irregular publishing schedule, name change, format change and five year publication pause early in its existence, it was impossible to find someone with a full run. This digital version was assembled from three different partial collections. This also means...

Jon Racherbaumer
The Legendary Kabbala (1971-1981) by Jon Racherbaumer

The meaning of Kabbala, translated from Hebrew, means something received and handed down. This definition resonates. Knowledge of magic, after all, is handed down from generation to generation, from magician to magician, and from teacher to disciple. Prior to xerography and personal computers, most magical knowledge was transmitted in this primitive, semi-private, and intimate means. Word-of-mouth reigned supreme and to a certain extent still does.

The magic scene in the Seventies was a blooming, buzzing place, atwitter with contentiousness and creativity. Close-up magic, particularly with...
